Deutsche Post World Net partnership with UNICEF

As a form of its concern over a large number of children dying of curable or preventable diseases annually worldwide, Deutsche Post World Net is providing support to UNICEF. The humanitarian project is part of its strategic partnership with the institution responsible for the welfare of children.

Through the strategic partnership, Deutsche Post World Net is extending help in the efficient management of complex logistical processes in addition to a range of other contributions, as an in-kind donation to UNICEF which would help reduce child mortality worldwide.

The group has also been working with the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the field of disaster management since December 2005. Here too, the Group provides OCHA and UNDP first and foremost with logistics expertise and the know-how and commitment of its staff.

Deutsche Post World Net’s global cooperation with UNICEF started with a project in Kenya and has been extended step-by-step on the basis of experience in the country. Through its logistics subsidiary DHL, Deutsche Post was able to contribute valuable assistance through its logistical support.

WH Smith's Swann hails 'fantastic' response to UK Post Office trial

Kate Swann, chief executive of WH Smith PLC, the newspapers, books and stationery retailer, said customer reaction to its experiment of in-store franchised Crown Post Office outlets has been very positive — a strong signal that the controversial trial will be extended across the group’s network.

Five other trial stores, in Swansea, Shrewsbury, Slough, Ashton-under-Lyne and Altrincham, have been running since the autumn — their establishment coinciding with the closure of traditional Post Offices in the same locations and consequent job losses.

Swann explained the trial has gone well as the outlets take up a relatively small amount of space but drive footfall. She noted that incremental sales of stationery products had been a feature.

A spokeswoman for WH Smith, which trades from 543 high street stores and 129 outlets at airports, train stations and motorway service areas, said the retailer is in constant dialogue with the Post Office and would say more about the trial when it publishes interim results on April 19.

Rural group backs UK Post Office closure plan

Plans for the reorganisation of the rural postal system that include the closure of 2,500 post offices have been welcomed by a group of rural campaigners.
The plans were announced to Parliament before Christmas by trade and industry secretary Alistair Darling. He said the restructuring was needed “to protect the national network”.
He said a GBP1.7 billion support package would be provided to maintain GBP150 million-a-year payments to the rural post office network until 2011. In addition, up to 4,000 fee-free cash machines will be rolled out to help customers in areas hit by the closures, he said.
To offset the closures, he said the Post Office would set up 500 “innovative outlets” for small, remote communities, including “mobile post offices and services in village halls, community centres and pubs”.
Sylvia Brown, chief executive of Action for Communities in Rural England, said the present system of post office support was unsustainable. She said: “We want the post office subsidy transformed into a contribution towards a genuine investment plan to help retain access to a range of services within rural communities.
“We are pleased that the minister recognises the future of post office services may lie in combined delivery with pubs, shops or village halls hosting services and sharing premises to reduce overheads.”
