The 'Big Orange's' Green Revolution

TNT has today taken a major step forward in its efforts to make the planet greener and cleaner.

TNT Express and TNT Logistics, in partnership with Smith Electric Vehicles, has unveiled the world’s first high performance 7.5-tonne zero emission electric vehicle, due to go into service in London.

Two TNT vehicles, both ‘Newton’ models, will be the first ever in their class that can compete with their diesel equivalents – but without the polluting effects of ‘controlled’ (i.e. nitrogen oxide and particulate matter) and CO2 emissions.

TNT’s vehicle will operate from the company’s Barking depot, while the TNT Logistics model will be based at its Starbucks operation in Basildon, Essex.

If the green trial proves successful, TNT will consider adding 200 other zero emission vehicles to its fleet to serve in other urban locations in the UK. This would result in significantly reduced controlled and CO2 emissions and consolidate TNT’s position at the top of the ‘green league’ in the transportation sector.

Post offices are heading for extinction

Post offices are in desperate need of Government support and direction if they are to survive, the network’s watchdog warned last night.

Postcomm believes the post office is becoming increasingly irrelevant as the number of services it provides are reduced – destroying its role as the social hub of a community.

The claims back up our Don’t Sound the Last Post campaign – which has now collected more than 12,000 signatures – and calls on the Government to do more to help keep post offices open.

Postcomm’s report, Post Offices at the Crossroads, paints a grim picture of the current state of the network.

The postal services regulator looked at 14,000 post offices around the country and found that the network lost GBP111 million last year despite a GBP150m subsidy to rural offices – which is being withdrawn in 2008.

It said the Department for Work and Pensions and the DVLA were withdrawing services from all post offices, which has already led to a GBP168m revenue loss over the last year.

The report also found that the rural post office network was in particular financial trouble, with only 1,500 of the 8,000 rural offices making money.

Government must decide quickly the future of a Post Office Network that is 'at the crossroads'

Postcomm, the independent regulator for postal services, today urged the Government to make the tough and overdue decisions needed to plan the future of the Post Office network. The Government must take into account the wider social role played by Post Offices in local communities as well as the imperative of establishing a sustainable, stable business.

Postcomm does not regulate Post Offices but it does monitor and research developments in the network of over 14,000 offices and provides independent advice to the Government in the form of an annual report which is published today, entitled “Post Offices at the crossroads”.

Research for Postcomm has provided clear evidence on why Post Offices urgently need a direction from the Government to secure their future. Postcomm believes that keeping things as they are is not an option.
