Solving The Inner City Challenge

Post&Parcel will be holding its first-ever Post&Parcel Live seminar in London next Thursday (27 April) and it is kicking off the series by tackling one of the industry’s biggest conundrums head-on: how do you solve the challenge of inner city deliveries. City dwellers’ passion for on-line shopping shows no signs of slowing down. Furthermore, they also want – and expect – their purchases to be delivered at an ever-faster pace. Next day, same day and even within-the-hour deliveries are becoming the norm.

How can the parcel delivery industry keep pace with these spiralling customer expectations – and also help to contain the problem of increasing road congestion?

This seminar will look at the new delivery models and technologies that could help carriers and their retail customers to solve these logistical and environmental challenges.

What are you speaking about at Post&Parcel Live?

I’ll be speaking about doing last mile deliveries by electric vehicles – particularly e-assist large cargo trikes

Why do you feel this is an important topic to discuss?

Our cities have been getting less and less focused on people – noisier, more polluted, more trucks. If cities are to thrive, they have to be spaces where people want to live, work and do business.

What can attendees expect to take away from your session?

Using low impact, clean delivery vehicles can help to make cities more liveable and offer better service levels.

We are growing. As air pollution and congestion become big issues for cities and the cost of last mile delivery is increasing, delivery companies are looking at what the alternatives are. We will begin expanding in to new cities soon.

The focus in cities is changing. People want cleaner and quieter spaces to live and work.

Business demand and procurement practices impacting upon urban congestion; and what simple tools can be implemented to assist alternative decision making.

Why do you feel this is an important topic to discuss?

The logistics industry and supply side can only go so far in changing the status quo. Customer needs and requirements must be better understood and influenced to impact change.

What can attendees expect to take away from your session?

Some helpful ideas about the way organisations can rethink their procurement, deliveries and servicing.

Why do you think events like Post&Parcel Live are important?

It’s really important for a collaborative approach to address many urban challenges, as everybody will need to change their approach for us to future-proof our cities. These events are fantastic for instigating discussion on urban challenges and developing solutions together.

Are you launching any innovative new products or services in the near future? Please tell us about them:

Yes, CRP’s new deliverBEST tool will help businesses rethink their deliveries and servicing requirements.

What is the biggest lesson you learned in 2016 and how will it influence you going forward?

Media awareness of the issues helps! For example recent media focus on air quality has really help engage stakeholders and focus collective thought on the issues.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges to inner city delivery and what can we do to meet them?

Our cities have limited space and our population and economies are growing! Our only option is to improve efficiency to keep goods flowing in and out of cities – it’s not going to be the usual suspects that solve this problem, more the disruptors.

What is your organisation’s role in transforming the industry?

CRP deliver regeneration projects across central London with multiple private and public sector partners. Our approach is multi-faceted working with the industry to trial new approaches; with consumers to affect demand and with authorities to rethink management of the public realm.

It’s a great opportunity to learn new things and make connections.

We are developing new content and services to support connected and autonomous cars, ubiquitous connectivity and the internet of things.

What is the biggest lesson you learned in 2016 and how will it influence you going forward?

Collaboration is the new differentiator. We have to get better at it.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges to inner city delivery and what can we do to meet them?

A growing interest in air quality

What is your organisation’s role in transforming the industry?

Finer spatial data will be required by a number of industries. The delivery industry has a role to play in both data capture and utilisation.
