ABX Logistics acquires Lyons-based AIT

ABX Logistics has taken steps to boost its growth in France by acquiring AIT, a leading regional player in the Eurocargo market for traffic with Southern Europe (Italy, Spain and Portugal).

AIT is based in Genas (Lyons), employs 35 people and has an annual turnover of approx. EUR 10 million. Founded in 1996 by the Sisti family, the company will complement ABX Logistics existing LTL, groupage, customs and logistics operations in the Rhone-Alps region of France.

In this part of France, ABX Logistics already has a turnover in excess of € 25 million in the international road, air and sea sectors. Currently operating from four locations across the region (Saint-Priest, Saint-Exupéry (airport), Grenoble and Chambéry), today’s acquisition adds a fifth location, namely the AIT site in Genas.

AIT’s customers will be able to enjoy the advantages of ABX Logistics densely meshed network that extends across the whole of Europe and offers daily round trips to destinations in countries including Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Benelux, the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia, as well as regular links with Turkey, Poland, Russia and Ukraine. ABX Logistics has more than 90 branches and hubs in Europe from which it conduct its international road groupage operations.

TNT Aims To Strengthen Parcel Operations, Mulls Acquisitions

Dutch postal and express company TNT NV aims to strengthen its European Express activities, and could make an acquisition such as Belgian parcel service ABX, spokesman Pieter Schaffels said Friday.
TNT’s European Express is its express delivery service for packages. With an operational hub in Liege, Belgium it handles package traffic from 67 European airports.
Schaffels declined to comment on whether TNT has made a bid for ABX Logistics SA, which is part of NMBS Holding Ltd.
Earlier Friday, Belgian newspaper De Tijd reported that three European postal groups are bidding for ABX, among them U.K.’s Royal Mail, The Belgian Post Group and TNT.
Under European Union regulations, ABX must find a buyer before NMBS merges with U.K. company 3i Group PLC.
With a market share of 21%, TNT is the largest European express delivery company. Chief Executive Peter Bakker has said he wants to further strengthen the division in Europe. “We always look at takeover opportunities to achieve that,” spokesman Schaffels said.

3i completes ABX Logistics buyout

British financial investor 3i said that it has completed the takeover of Belgian-based ABX Logistics for an undisclosed sum following this week’s clearance for the deal from the European Commission. But, as previously reported, the domestic Belgian business has been left under the ownership of Belgian Railways.

3i said in a statement that it and funds which it has advised have completed the acquisition of ABX Logistics’ international trucking, air and sea freight forwarding activities, including those to and from Belgium, and its contract logistics business. The deal was previously valued at about €80 million by Belgian media.

But the acquisition excludes the local road distribution business within Belgium which represents less than 3% of total group turnover. This business includes the original ABX Logistics domestic parcels operation.

ABX Logistics, with turnover of €2.5 billion and a workforce of circa 10,000 people, has returned to profit following restructuring and downsizing over the past few years. 3i said it is backing the existing management team, led by Laurent Levaux, Chief Executive Officer.

ABX Logistics Belgian parcels business set for separation

The Belgian parcels business of ABX Logistics may be retained by Belgian Railways and sold to a separate company instead of being sold as part of the overall disposal of ABX Logistics Worldwide to British finance group 3i, Belgian media reported. Following an MoU signed last year, 3i is expected to complete the acquisition of ABX Logistics Worldwide for an estimated €80 million within the next couple of months. The former heavily loss-making freight logistics group, burdened by large-scale debts, has downsized and restructured in recent years, and now makes a small operating profit.
