Japan Airlines to merge with Japan Air System

Japan Airlines (JAL), Asia’s largest carrier, said on Monday it would merge with Japan Air System (JAS), the third-largest domestic carrier, to form the world’s sixth-biggest carrier.

Possible privatistion of Amsterdams Schiphol Airport

Schiphol is already the fourth largest gateway in Europe for both passengers and cargo. The recognition that this fact provides will be further boosted over the next few months, thanks to the part-privatisation of parent company Schiphol Group (see panel page 6). Meanwhile, the airport is pursuing various initiatives and projects which should ensure its continued development as more than a mere air transport hub. Belgian government moves to save Sabena jobs

Sabena, the Belgian state-controlled airline, was formally declared bankrupt on Wednesday, but not before the country’s government announced that it had raised E200m ($180m) to save up to half of Sabena’s jobs.

The government said 12 private sector groups would put E155m into a new company built around Sabena’s regional subsidiary DAT, along with E45m from state-controlled investment funds.
