Sabena's fate is uncertain

More uncertainty on Wednesday surrounded the fate of Sabena, Belgium’s troubled flagship airline, as the government tried to play down news reports that a move to file for bankruptcy could soon be made.

Since Sabena is under Chapter 11 style protection from its creditors, such an initiative could come from one of several parties.

The government, which owns 50.5 per cent in the lossmaking airline, indicated it was not considering a bankruptcy filing in the next few days.

DHL and Evergreen Air Cargo announce partnership

DHL World Express announced yesterday a partnership with Taiwan’s Evergreen Air Cargo Services Corporation (EGAC), which will soon provide the international express courier with air-side facilities in EGAC’s cargo terminal at CKS international airport.

The deal is part of an aggressive US$300 million investment program by DHL to enhance the company’s ground infrastructure so that it can strengthen its parcel handling efficiency in the Asia Pacific region and Taiwan.

“DHL adjusts the balance of its investment portfolio depending on where the demand for business is,” said Asia Pacific CEO Marc Duale.

USPS and US Airlines plan to resume flying Priority Mail for holiday season

the Post Office and U.S. airlines are formulating new security procedures that will allow the airlines to resume carrying priority mail in time for the busy holiday shopping season. The Federal Aviation Administration banned priority mail – typically parcels weighing up to 70 pounds with two- to three-day delivery – since the Sept. 11 hijackings. The agency ended its ban on airline movements of express mail and registered mail about 10 days ago. However, most express mail moves on cargo-only Federal Express planes.

Brussels protests over proposed aid to Swissair

Brussels protested on Tuesday about the proposed recapitalisation of Swissair but admitted it was unable to stop the operation from going through.

The move came as the regional airline Crossair started the process of transforming itself into the new flag carrier after the collapse of Swissair. Late on Monday, Swiss public authorities and companies unveiled a SFr4.24bn ($2.55bn) salvage plan, using Crossair to restore a national airline with a Zurich airport hub as well as save tens of thousands of jobs.

Alliance between British Airways and American Airlines back on agenda. BA & KLM discussing alliance

The controversial alliance between British Airways and American Airlines is back on the agenda as the British and US governments hold talks in London today aimed at liberalising air services. BA and KLM, the Dutch flag carrier, said yesterday they were discussing ways to co-operate to cut costs and increase revenues, both with each other and with other European airlines.
