Shanghai airports report double-digit rise in passenger handling business

Shanghai’s two airports handled a record 51.57 million passengers last year, an 11.8 percent increase over 2006.

The Pudong International and Hongqiao airports offered services to 440,809 planes in total in 2007, up 7.61 percent. Pudong handled 58 percent, or 253,671 takeoffs and landings, while Hongqiao accommodated 42 percent, or 187,138 takeoffs and landings, according to a Shanghai Airport Authority source.

Pudong was the only airport in the world to provide a dual presence for courier companies UPS and DHL. It ranked fifth globally for cargo and mail handling volume in the first three quarters of 2007, said the source.

Currently, 71 domestic and overseas air companies have been operating regular air routes to Shanghai, linking the Chinese financial and commercial hub with 179 cities worldwide.

DHL upgrades freighters from Turkey

DHL Aviation has boosted its capacity from Turkey by over 160 per cent, by replacing of its five weekly B757 freighters with six weekly A300 freighters.

The airline now offers a total allocation of 520,000 kg of main deck space per month from Istanbul to its European hub in Brussels, linking to 136 destinations worldwide on its own services. Interline agreements with American Airlines, Air Canada and Continental Airlines add a further 94 destinations.

DHL Aviation is represented in Turkey by its GSSA of 11 years, Kargosistem AS, whose managing director Demir Ozerman, said: “This additional freighter capacity, coupled with network expansion and improved routings, gives DHL Aviation much greater potential in this market. It also significantly improves the scope of services we can offer to the Turkish airfreight community and boosts our total portfolio of destinations to almost 300.”

Air Contractors bags French post

AIR Contractors has acquired French postal provider Europe Airpost.

Exclusive negotiations were completed on 30 November between Air Contractors and La Poste.

A number of formalities, including the privatisation approval of EAP will now follow. These are expected to be completed by early February 2008.

DHL departure will leave NWA high and dry

Northwest Airlines’ cargo future is hanging in the balance, as the carrier prepares for the loss of its largest customer, DHL Express, next year.

Chief financial officer Dave Davis, said that Northwest will quit flying for DHL late next year. The carrier may be forced to consolidate its airfreight business, or to consider a merger, but it claims selling it is not an option.

Davis said Northwest is “actively looking” for the right partner for a possible merger.

Northwest’s fleet of 747 freighters makes it the only US carrier with dedicated cargo aircraft.
