British Airways has launched a competition for new longhaul aircraft by issuing tender documents to aircraft and engine manufacturers.

Airbus and Boeing, and engine manufacturers, Engine Alliance, General Electric and Rolls Royce plus other key component suppliers, have been invited to bid. British Airways’ CEO, Willie Walsh, said: “For the past four years, we have grown capacity by using our aircraft more efficiently.

In order to continue to grow our longhaul business we now need additional longhaul aircraft. We remain committed to generating an economic return for our shareholders. Launching the competition highlights the need for us to address our GBP 2.1 billion pension deficit.

With a combination of firm orders and options, we are planning for both growth and fleet replacement into the next decade. Environmental performance will be one of the key criteria in our choice ensuring greater fuel efficiency, reduced noise and emissions.”

Walsh said that the first aircraft to be replaced are the 20 B747s and 14 B767s, which will be around 25 years old. Subject to the outcome of the RFP competition, orders are expected to be placed during next year. Aircraft being considered for the airline’s longhaul fleet are the A330, A350, A380 and B787, B777 and B747-8. www.ba.com

Shanghai overtakes Tokyo as top city for CPS bookings, Unisys Says

Shanghai, South China’s major air logistics hub, moved slightly ahead of Tokyo in September as the city from which forwarders are making the most air cargo bookings on Unisys-operated Cargo Portal Services (CPS). Tokyo forwarders had previously led as early adopters of CPS, so this change demonstrates that their performance can be replicated elsewhere.

The 5 top cities generating the most CPS air cargo bookings after Shanghai were Tokyo, Toronto, Hong Kong, Beijing and Los Angeles. Unisys had reported on Tokyo’s previous top position in April 2006 (see http://www.unisys.com/about__unisys/news_a_events/04288654.htm).

“These results demonstrate the value of a global multi-carrier booking portal like CPS and the willingness of forwarders, especially in Asia and North America, to make bookings electronically,” said Christopher Shawdon, vice president and partner, Logistics Solutions at Unisys.

Retailers in dogfight for air cargo space

The retail war has now moved to the skies. Retail companies are fiercely competing against each other to acquire cargo aircraft in a bid to put their backward logistics in place.

The proposed retail models being pursued by the retailers would demand speedy transportation of perishable goods, for which all agri hubs across the country need to be well connected.

This move by the retailers is also expected to throw up new opportunities for the airline companies in the cargo business. Several airline companies including low cost carriers like Air Deccan and Go Cargo among others are drawing up plans of expanding the cargo infrastructure.

While upcoming retail ventures like Reliance and Bharti are already in talks for striking long term strategic alliances with some international as well as domestic cargo fleets, others like Tatas, Birlas and RPG are learnt to be mulling similar options.

On the other hand, to leverage opportunities that this may throw up, some prominent low cost airlines are also venturing into dedicated cargo fleet. Experts say low cost airlines, already marred by increasing losses would want to leverage their existing infrastructure to grab a pie of the burgeoning retail sector.
