TNT to hire 100 additional pilots for European air network

TNT Express today announced that it will hire an additional 80 pilots during 2006, following the recruitment of an initial 20 in January, to fly new aircraft scheduled to enter service over the coming 16 months. The pilots will join TNT Airways’ existing Liège-based aircrew of 284 to operate the additional two BAe 146, two B747-400 ERF and five B737 SF aircraft that are set to join the company’s airfleet by May 2007.

DHL to leave Brussels earlier than expected

According to La Libre Belgique today, DHL could leave Brussels much earlier than anticipated (April 2008), because the works at Leipzig are nearing completion. The move out of Zaventem would be coupled with an early withdrawal of DHL from Cologne to Leipzig. According to Knack magazine dated 15 March, DHL would stop its activities at Cologne in September 2007, i.e. 3 months earlier than announnced, to move to Leipzig where extension works are progressing at high speed. DHL management has submitted new requests to the Belgian trade unions in order to leave earlier.

ABX Air notified of intent to reduce hub services

ABX Air, Inc. announced today an agreement with its major customer, DHL, that will reduce the range of services provided by ABX Air under the Hub and Line-haul Services Agreement during 2006, and provides a framework for negotiating other potential terms in the Hub Services Agreement and the Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance Agreement. Specifically, ABX Air and DHL have agreed that: DHL will take over responsibility for the over-the-road truck line-haul network ABX Air currently manages for DHL; DHL will not require ABX Air to operate or manage its Allentown hub after a new facility opens at that location in the third quarter of 2006; ABX Air will have an opportunity to earn additional performance incentives beyond the existing contractual incentives in its ACMI Agreement and Hub Services Agreement if it can achieve very significant cost reductions in 2006; and ABX Air and DHL will undertake negotiation of additional modifications to the Hub Services Agreement and the ACMI Agreement to create greater risk/reward metrics for performance under these agreements.

DHL hub move to Leipzig underway

DHL has begun operating aircraft out of Leipzig in eastern Germany, two years before the airport becomes fully operational as its main European hub. Five aircraft have been switched from Berlin to the new facility, with five more due to call at Leipzig later this year to serve eastern Europe. DHL is investing EUR300m in Leipzig, which is expected to handle 2,000 tonnes of freight a day at maximum capacity. From 2008, 60-70 aircraft movements through Leipzig are expected every night. Peter Kruse, CEO of DHL said: “Not all [European] aircraft will need to go to Leipzig; our existing hub in Brussels will still be operational as a smaller gateway serving the Benelux.”

Japan's Nippon Express to join ANA-Japan Post cargo venture

Nippon Express Co and Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd will invest in an international cargo airline that All Nippon Airways Co (ANA) and Japan Post plan to jointly establish, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported without citing sources. Nippon Express and Mitsui OSK will take stakes of about 10 pct and 5 pct respectively in the joint venture. The new company will be capitalized at 30 mln yen and will be set up in February initially as a wholly owned subsidiary of ANA, the report said. The airline will then sell a portion of its stake to Japan Post, Nippon Express and Mitsui OSK in April, when Japan Post is allowed to enter the international shipping business. As a result, ANA’s stake will decline to 51.7 pct and Japan Post’s will reach 33.3 pct.
