DHL’s hub shift to Leipzig/Halle Airport is official

The contract for the establishment at Leipzig/Halle Airport of the European airfreight hub to be operated by DHL was signed on September 21, 2005, marking the ratification of the agreement to relocate the DHL hub to Leipzig/Halle.
The conclusion of the contract will allow the Central German airport to become one of the most significant freight nodal points in Europe. From 2008, some fifty DHL freight aircraft will be using Leipzig/Halle as their hub base every day, in order for up to 2,000 tonnes of freight to be sorted and forwarded worldwide every night. “We have concluded a good contract which will secure the growth of DHL and of the Airport, and which represents an important milestone on the way to Leipzig/Halle by DHL,” said managing director of DHL Hub Leipzig, Michael Reinboth. “This contract has established an important precondition towards the creation of the planned 3,500 jobs at DHL as the air freight hub.”

Circle sets a precedent with link-up to UK pallet network

Circle Express has become the first major air freight trucking company to link up with a UK pallet network. The move by the UK’s biggest independent air cargo trucking supplier means agents can choose between a next-day delivery service for palletised cargo via the Pallet Track network, or Circle’s existing premium air freight trucking service. The move reflected increasing pressure on forwarders’margins, as well as the tendency for agents to also take on logistics or general distribution work for shippers, said Circle regional director Richard Crook. Pallet networks had also begun to penetrate those markets, putting pressure on rates.

UPS parcel carried faces pilots’ strike

After an almost three-year dispute with the world’s largest package delivery company, United Parcel Service, its pilots have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. UPS has 2,459 pilots, of whom almost 97 percent are eligible to vote and agreed to authorize the Independent Pilots Association to call a strike. Despite the vote, the pilots are prohibited from striking unless the union is released from US federally supervised mediation. The president of the pilots’ union, Tom Nicholson, said he would delay in requesting a release from mediation because of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the role UPS pilots may could be called on to play in relief efforts. Nicholson said in an interview. “Will we ask for release? Without a contract, yes. When will that happen? I don’t know.” UPS last week said it had anticipated the vote, but that the threatened strike would have no impact on its business. UPS says its pilots are among the best paid in the industry, and it called for mediation to continue.
