DHL announces plans to expand facility near Columbus, Ohio

DHL plans to spend USD4 million to expand near Rickenbacker Airport, a move that will create 150 jobs. The express delivery and logistics company said the investment will be made over five years at its DHL Columbus Commerce Park on Spiegel Drive, north of Rickenbacker. The facility has 120 employees, a mixture of DHL workers and employees contracted through a company that is a partner of DHL. The additional hires primarily will be contract employees, DHL spokesman Robert Mintz said. DHL will expand its 320,000-square-foot warehouse at Rickenbacker by more than 20 percent. DHL uses the facility to provide logistics services, such as warehousing, inventory management, packaging and transportation management. “The primary reason for this expansion is growth in our third-party operations,” said John Robinson, director of logistics operations. “It allows us to expand for our current clients and accommodate new clients.”

Thailand: Delivery companies invest in facilities near new airport

Major express delivery companies are making huge investments at Suvarnabhumi Airport, which is expected to help make Thailand a new regional hub both for air travel and cargo, The Nation reports. The opening of the airport, scheduled later this year, and bilateral open-sky pacts with neighbouring countries are the most important factors behind the push. DHL predicts rapid expansion of its presence in Thailand after Suvarnabhumi Airport opens, with a plan to make its parcel and express service centre at the new airport six times larger than its existing facility at Don Muang airport. The new centre is part of DHL’s plans for expansion in the Asia-Pacific region with a total investment of USD1.4 billion (Bt57.3 billion). Investment in Thailand alone will amount to USD15 million. Meanwhile, FedEx has launched its new world service centre on King Keaw Road, about 10 minutes from the new airport, to serve customers in areas east of Bangkok. Netherlands-based TNT, the other major international player, plans to spend up to Bt4 million in 2005-2006 on warehouses and delivery centres throughout Thailand, said country general manger Winfried Kiesbueye.

FedEx to build Asia’s largest cargo hub at Guangzhou’s Baiyun airport

US logistics firm FedEx Corp said it plans to build what will be the largest Asia-Pacific hub at Guangzhou’s Baiyun International Airport in southern China.
The company said it will invest 150 mln usd in the facility which will have a total floor space of 82,000 square meters located on 63 hectares. The hub is expected to assume and expand the current activities of the existing hub in the Philippines, beginning in December 2008, the company said in a statement. ‘More than two decades ago, we envisioned China as a nexus of global supply and demand and as a result became the first express carrier to enter the market,’ said Frederick Smith, FedEx chairman. ‘Today, we further invest in our leadership position by creating a new gateway that expands our customers’ access to the global marketplace.’ FedEx said the decision to develop the new hub was made following a study that forecast Asia will remain the world’s fastest growing regional air freight market, with growth of 8.5 pct each year until 2023.

German Leipzig/Halle airport set to be DP/DHL main hub

The Leipzig/Halle airport’s 290 mln eur expansion can go ahead, according to a ruling by the federal administrative court here that paves the way for Deutsche Post AG’s DHL unit to make the airport its main European hub.

The German court said the expected level of aircraft noise at night resulting from the expansion — which includes a new runway and 24-hour service — is acceptable.

DHL said in November last year it will shift operations to Leipzig from Brussels in 2008 after the Belgian government insisted the company invest in quieter aircraft for night flights, a demand DHL was unwilling to meet.

The unit plans to employ about 3,500 staff in Leipzig by 2012.
