USPS cuts tie to American Airlines

The US Postal Service says it has suspended American Airlines’ contract to deliver domestic mail after the airline failed to meet performance measures – a decision that could cost the carrier millions. For consumers, mail delivery won’t be affected, postal officials say. But the decision could cost the airline tens of millions of dollars this year, at a time when Fort Worth-based American is already struggling with high fuel prices and intense competition that has driven down airfares. American executives, however, dispute the postal service’s assertion. They say the contract remains in force, although they acknowledge that the airline is in talks with the post office regarding future mail delivery. “We’re having a conversation about the nature of our relationship,” said Tim Wagner, an airline spokesman. “But our contractual relationship with the postal service has not changed.” Wagner also noted that American’s international mail delivery business remains unaffected.

At the time An Post chief operating officer Larry Donald said the company would look at alternatives for its outbound mail service and warned there would be a cost issue for An Post which had operating losses of 30m in 2003.

Deutsche Post prepares to transfer European logistics centre from Brussels to Leipzig

Deutsche Post has overcome the final obstacle to transferring its European logistics centre from Brussels to Leipzig. DHL, the express and logistics subsidiary of the group, has concluded negotiations with Belgian trade unions regarding its current hub at Brussels airport, where the company has agreed to guarantee the preservation of jobs until April 2008. In exchange, staff have promised that there will be no disruptions to operations. DHL is planning to invest 300m euros in Leipzig, where the airport will be able to remain in operation 24 hours a day, unlike in Brussels.
