DOT orders FedEx to repay USD29 million

FedEx Corp. is challenging an order by the US Department of Transportation to repay USD29 million of the federal money it received after the 2001 terrorist attacks, a spokesman said Friday. The Air Transportation Safety and System Stabilization Act provided financial relief to US air carriers after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. FedEx was paid USD101 million under the act in 2002. But a review by the Department of Transportation determined that the company was only entitled to USD72 million and it wants FedEx to repay the rest. “We will vigorously challenge this,” FedEx spokesman Jess Bunn said. “We’ve already started looking at various ways to appeal this decision.”

DHL streamlining to impact ABX Air revenues

ABX Air, the one-year-old air cargo airline spun off from courier Airborne Express following the merger with DHL in 2003, said it expects to lose USD86 million to USD96 million in gross revenue in 2005 as a result of route restructuring by primary customer DHL. Airborne was forced to spin off its in-house airline to comply with U.S. corporate citizenship laws for owning domestic airlines. DHL retained ABX as its main air carrier, along with Astar Air Cargo, formerly DHL Airways. DHL notified ABX that it no longer would require airlift on 22 routes provided by 26 aircraft. Seven of the 26 aircraft are to be removed from service in January, with the remaining 19 aircraft removed by the end of 2005. The projected revenue reductions include money the airline made from marking up expenses to operate its planes. ABX said annual net income would take a hit in the range of USD800,000 to USD1.5 million.

Leipzig/Halle is favoured option for central DHL hub

Deutsche Post World Net intends to extend the Airport Leipzig/Halle into the central European hub of its express and logistics subsidiary DHL. Plans for a move to the alternative location Vatry, France, are not pursued any further at present. As no political consensus on an extension could be achieved in Belgium, it is intended to maintain Brussels as a regional hub from 2008 onwards. Until then, DHL plans to keep activities running at the current scale at Brussels Airport. Following the successful finalization of all negotiations and preparations, start of operations in Leipzig could be realized at the beginning of 2008. The Group plans to invest around 300 million euros in the new site and to create around 3,500 jobs by 2012. “This is a location that would pave the way for the necessary growth of DHL in the future and provides the Group with long-term planning security”, says Dr Klaus Zumwinkel, Chairman of the Board of Management of Deutsche Post World Net.
