UPS Launches New Flights to China

UPS this week began the first of 12 new flights to China with MD-11 service to Shanghai. The new flights will triple the current service from six to 18 flights a week and comes on the heels of UPS’s impressive 129% growth in China export volume in the third quarter. “Thanks to these flights, we are moving ahead of customer demand with even greater access to the world’s fastest growing economy,” said David Abney, president, UPS International. “China is probably the most exciting business opportunity in a generation and our growth numbers from the country show that customers are turning to UPS for the efficiency and reliability of its worldwide network.”

FedEx adding more flights to Germany

FedEx Corp. said Monday it is adding more trans-Atlantic flights, part of a plan to boost capacity to Europe. The company said the flights from its main hub in Memphis to Cologne, Germany will allow it to better serve that country’s industrial heartland. FedEx said it will add the flights in March, bringing its trans-Atlantic total to 28 a week from 23 a week. The increase in flights to Europe is part of a plan to capitalize on rising international express shipments.

DHL to expand operations in Japan via Chubu Airport

Germany’s DHL International Ltd. said Friday it is aiming to expand its business in Japan by capitalizing on the opening of Chubu International Airport, a new international gateway to central Japan, in February 2005. Under its business plan through the end of 2005, DHL plans to increase its number of international parcel delivery transactions in Japan by utilizing the international cargo and passenger flights of its affiliated or partner airlines to and from the new airport, which is under construction on reclaimed land off Nagoya. Air Hongkong, an affiliate of DHL, will fly a cargo plane to and from Chubu International Airport. Northwest Airlines and Germany’s Lufthansa, both of which are DHL partner airways, will also cooperate with the German company.

Transport strike, parcel service demonstration leaves Brussels in gridlock

A public transport strike and a demonstration by employees of DHL led to traffic gridlock in Brussels early Friday. Police closed of several major roads in the city during morning rush hour to accommodate the DHL demonstration, where thousands were expected to protest. With public transport unions also going on strike to demand better working conditions, thousands of people were left stranded in traffic-choked streets. The DHL workers are protesting a decision to move the courier’s international hub away from Brussels as of 2008 in a dispute over excessive noise from night flights.

DHL said leaning toward German hub

The express unit of Deutsche Post World Net reportedly has given up expansion plans at the Brussels airport and is more likely to expand in Leipzig, Germany.
DHL announced last week that the conditions set by Belgian government “regrettably do not allow DHL to create an intercontinental hub at Brussels National Airport.” For now DHL will maintain its current level of activities at the airport but plans to begin moving business to other airports in 2008. DHL will announce within two weeks whether the hub would be established in Leipzig or at Vatry in northern France, said company spokesman Xavier De Buck. Public subsidies that DHL could receive if it opted for Leipzig suggest Germany has an edge over France for the international center.
