FedEx doubles flights to China

FedEx Express was today awarded 12 additional weekly flights to China by the US Department of Transportation, bringing its total to 23. The additional authority will allow FedEx Express to operate more all-cargo flights to and from China than any other US airline. FedEx Express will use six of its awarded frequencies to provide a new westbound round-the-world service connecting the US to Shanghai with stops in Europe and other points in Asia using an MD-11 freighter. The other six frequencies, available in March 2005, will be used to establish an eastbound round-the-world service connecting the US, Europe, Japan and India to Shanghai, Shenzhen, and other points in Asia using an MD-11 aircraft. Looking ahead to 2006, FedEx has asked the DOT for six additional weekly flights (bringing the total of weekly flight to 29) to include Guangzhou into its global and regional express networks. Currently, FedEx Express operates 11 weekly flights to China, serving Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen.

DHL answer due to government on night flight requirements

DHL parcel service was due to tell the government Monday how it would contain noisy flights over densely populated areas if allowed to expand its European hub in Brussels, with fears rising no compromise could be found. “I will do my utmost to make sure an agreement can be reached,” said Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt. He said he will not allow too many new flights over the capital and outlying areas, but also wants to keep DHL in Belgium to save thousands of jobs. “The most important is to reconcile the two points of view,” he told VRT network. The express delivery company was expected to offer details on its noise-reduction efforts, such as when it will put quieter planes into operation, while resisting demands for fewer late-night flights.

DHL noise curb won’t clinch Brussels deal

Even if global courier DHL were to limit the use of noisy planes at Brussels Airport, this would not be enough to reach a deal on its planned expansion, a key regional Belgian minister was quoted as saying on Wednesday. DHL’s plans to increase flights at Brussels’ Zaventem Airport hit new obstacles earlier this month when squabbling national and regional governments closed ranks to demand that the company reduce the use of noisy intercontinental planes. “Even if DHL were to say today that it would be prepared to limit itself to four noisy MD-11 (planes) per night… the case will not yet be solved,” Yves Leterme, the prime minister of the northern Dutch-speaking Flanders region, told the daily Metro in an interview.
