Landmark China-US deal opens up air cargo market –

The US DoT will be responsible for allocating the new flights, the first of which will be available in August. The new agreement contains a key provision that allows US cargo carriers to establish hubs in China once specific criteria are met. The agreement also includes provisions for a 500% increase in cargo capacity between the two countries and underscores the increasing globalisation of commerce and benefits of bilateral trade.

Hearings were taking place last week in the House of Representatives on the postal reform act, which includes a complete liberalisation of the air transport of mail, allowing the postal service (USPS) to go to an open bid process. Currently, international US mail has to be carried by US carriers, with foreign companies only allowed to carry mail via codeshares or to destinations not served by US airlines.
