UPS, FedEx urge US to drop Astar deadline

FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service on Monday asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to lift the Dec. 1 deadline for an administrative law judge’s recommendations on the ownership of Astar Air Cargo, formerly DHL Airways. The big U.S. express carriers complained that two U.S.-based subsidiaries of archrival Deutsche Post World Net have failed to comply with the judge’s order to produce documents related to the investigation into whether Astar is illegally controlled by Deutsche Post.

France – Asia may see sector through a rough patch

As if the effects of Sars and the global economic downturn were not enough, the French air freight industry started the year with another blow: an air traffic controllers’ strike. The setbacks induced a 6.3% drop in capacity at Air France and a subsequent 5.7% decrease in cargo volumes in the first quarter of this year. The malaise probably had something to do with the decision from TAT, the French post office’s B2B express parcels arm, to axe 60% of its express operations from Paris.

Poor results – cargo revenue down 8.8% for the first quarter and a reduction of 9.2% in total airline revenue – could also be the driving force behind Air France’s talks with KLM.

Although Air France will not elaborate, it has admitted the two airlines are discussing taking a minority stake in each other.

TNT opens airport express facility in Indonesia

International forwarder TNT Express has opened an express depot at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Banten, as part of its efforts to improve the speed and efficiency of its service.

“Since we first opened our doors for business in 1979 in Indonesia, TNT has demonstrated a strong commitment to our customers and to developing the air express delivery and logistics industry in the country,” TNT Indonesia’s Colin Moran said in a press release.

DHL ordered to hand over documents in U.S. probe

A judge has ordered DHL Worldwide Express, the U.S. arm of DHL Express, to hand over documents requested by FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service in the investigation into the ownership of Astar Air Cargo, formerly DHL Airways. Some of the documents sought by FedEx and UPS involve the financial relationship between Brussels-based DHL International, and William Robinson, the former principal owner of DHL Airways.
