Former DHL Airways owner refuses to testify in DOT probe

As expected, William A. Robinson, the former principal owner of DHL Airways, now Astar Air Cargo, failed to appear at a deposition hearing in Los Angeles Thursday in the federal probe into the ownership of DHL’s all-cargo airline. In a letter to attorneys for FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service, whose complaint sparked the Department of Transportation probe, Robinson’s attorney, Philip Le B. Douglas, said the deposition will not go forward because Robinson believes his testimony is no longer relevant in light of the airline’s sale Monday to an investor group led by John Dasburg, its chairman and chief executive. Robinson had previously agreed to testify.

Judge rejects Deutsche Post counter-subpoenas

The Department of Transportation on Tuesday rejected the latest bid by Deutsche Post World Net and DHL International to force the chief executives of U.S. rivals FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service to testify in the dispute over the ownership of DHL’s cargo airline. Deutsche Post and DHL had sought to subpoena Fred Smith, chairman and chief executive of FedEx, and Mike Eskew, chairman and chief executive of UPS, in response to the subpoenas of their chief executives issued by the administrative law judge in the case.

FedEx, UPS win Hong Kong air rights

FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service were the big winners when the U.S. Department of Transportation tentatively awarded six airlines Monday the right to operate all-cargo services between Hong Kong and other cities outside the U.S. FedEx and UPS together received tentative rights to 25 of the 40 additional slots available to U.S. cargo carriers under a new bilateral agreement. The express carriers each won the right to six flights immediately to their Asia regional hubs in the Philippines. They have already been operating those flights under interim authority granted by DOT last November.

U.S. investment group acquire DHL Airways

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Dasburg and a U.S. investor group have completed the acquisition of DHL Airways, the cargo charter airline announced today. The completion of this transaction solidifies the airline’s U.S. ownership, control and management.

The other members of the Dasburg-led investment group are Richard C. Blum, Chairman of San Francisco-based Blum Capital Partners, L.P., a leading private equity firm, and Michael R. Klein, a Washington, D.C. business executive and lawyer who is co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of CoStar Group, Inc. ASTAR Air Cargo will remain a privately held company.
