UPS pilot layoffs follow slump in package-delivery business

UPS plans to layoff as many as 100 pilots, about four percent of its total, in the latest sign of the stubborn slump in package deliveries. The layoffs are the first since UPS launched its own airline in 1988. The Atlanta company, which said no additional job cuts are planned, hopes to avoid at least some layoffs by offering leaves of absence or “voluntary separation plans,” a spokesman said

UPS inks agreement with Yangtze River Express Airlines

UPS has signed an agreement with Chinese cargo airline Yangtze River Express Airlines Co. that will expand its service network in China.

The deal provides regular flights to link UPS’s gateway in Shanghai with the major Chinese cities of Beijing, Qingdao, Xiamen and Guangzhou. UPS already operates daily flights from Shanghai to major destinations in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

KLM warns of full year loss

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines today said cargo traffic was flat in December, and also issued a warning that it is unlikely to achieve a full-year operating profit as a slowing global economy and political uncertainty are depressing demand and trimming margins.

Europe’s fourth-largest airline said cargo volumes last month were the same as a year ago and down 5 percent from December 2000. Traffic on Asia Pacific routes, which has grown strongly in recent months, stagnated in December while traffic on the North Atlantic slipped 4 percent.

KLM’s cargo traffic is still up 4 percent for the first nine months of the fiscal year but the sudden slowdown in December has raised concern the revival in the world air freight market is running out of steam.

CBI Calls for extra runway at city airport

An extra runway should be built at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, business leaders argued last night.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has advised the Government that the Speke site should expand to help industry.

Liverpool JLA handles large volumes of freight and is the main hub for Royal Mail services in the North of England.

The CBI’s recommendation comes in response to a consultation document on options for the future of air transport in the UK.

A final decision on national expansion will be made by the Government next year.
