Aramex opens new logistics facility in Bahrain

Aramex has announced the opening of a new TAPA-certified 4,000 m2 logistics centre in the Bahrain International Airport Free Zone.

The infrastructure investment underlines Bahrain’s increasing role as a supply chain solutions hub, led by its important geographic position within Aramex’s regional network, connecting by land to Kuwait, Qatar and KSA.

Aramex’s customs clearing process at key land border checkpoints that streamlines procedures and the new facility’s location in the airport’s Global Logistics Services (GLS) zone will help to ensure quick turnaround for cargo being shipped between the aircraft and warehouse.

DHL Oman: ‘We want to be everybody’s first choice’

As DHL completes 30 years, its Country Operations Manager, Oman, Geoff Walsh explains to OER’s Visvas Paul D Karra the reasons that have made DHL a trusted name for its customers

Can you shed light on some of DHL’s pioneering services?
I think the biggest thing we have pioneered is the use of ease. We are present all over Oman in 16 locations, which includes all the major towns. One of the biggest initiatives in the Middle East is our Import Express, so you can have an account here and request for a collection from Timbuktu or from Sydney. We take care of all the paper work and ensure that you get your shipment. You can have one user account and you can do export, import and even door-to-door freight service.

Since the past couple of years, we are also doing the time definite pre-nine, pre-12. If you want a shipment to be sent to the UAE by 9 am the next day, you pay a small premium and we guarantee to deliver it before 9 am otherwise you get your premium back. So, it gives a scale of prices and scale of services.

How do you view your competitors in Oman?
There are the usual global competitors like Fedex, TNT, UPS, etc, and then the local ones like Aramex, besides other small players. Our advantage lies in our knowledge of Middle East customers because we are here since the last 30 years and that stands us in very good stead. We have to give the best service and best performance consistently. I think that is what separates us. All our competitors get business but if a customer has got something important to be delivered and needs to guarantee it reaches there, they will come to us.

DHL’s logistics chain has acquired a global reputation. What accounts for this?
We have 250 trailers moving around the Middle East and these go into Africa and Europe. Sometimes 10-15 of them pull automotive parts. And then, we charter an aircraft if it is needed. We are also the only company in the Middle East which has an airline of its own. We have a plane based in Bahrain.

And then we have our couriers, they are not just delivery or collection boys. They do the scanning, they know the importance of the shipment and they get to know the customers because of the training we give them. It is a whole package oriented towards the ‘first choice’ motto.

What is your opinion about Oman as a market?
Oman is diversifying from oil to non-oil revenues. This is attracting a lot of investments and the country is growing. We have been a significant cog in the growth. The big multinational companies, like banks and other manufacturers who come into Oman, need infrastructure and DHL can help and support them to get it. Being here and supporting the growth is important. It is what I said about providing solutions. We want to be everywhere and everything for everybody. We want to be everybody’s first choice.

What are your expansion plans in the Sultanate of Oman?
Our investment in Oman is increasing. At the moment I am drawing up the budget plan and I know that what I am going to invest now is more than what has been invested in the last 10 years.

We are going to have a brand new country office in Seeb in the final quarter of 2009. We are looking for a larger warehouse facility in Ghala area. On other locations, we have Express centres where people can just walk into, like a shop. This is what I call the retail strategy. We want it to be easy to use DHL, as easy as walking into a supermarket or a store to buy milk. To be a customer’s first choice, we have to be easy to use, we need to be reliable, and have quality and consistency.

How secure is a parcel sent by DHL?
We do everything to make sure that every shipment is secure. Every shipment is treated exactly the same way. Similarly, all our offices and express centres have CCTVs and all our courier boys are vetted and trained to follow strict security procedures. Therefore, our shipments are as safe as you carry your own luggage on a holiday.

Aramex Introduces Biodegradable Packages

Aramex has successfully introduced eco-friendly courier bags across its global network.

The major initiative, which began at the start of the year, involved phasing out all plastic bags for its express courier dispatches, replacing them with new eco-friendly, bio-degradable pouches.

Supporting the use of alternative resources, the switch demonstrates Aramex’s commitment to reduce the use of plastic in its operations as part of a wider pledge towards environmentally sustainable business practices.

It is estimated that polythene, the most common type of plastic, takes more than 100 years to break down, until which time it persists in landfill sites and pollutes the environmental landscape.

Made from recycled polythene, the new pouches include a special additive in the material which reduces the molecular weight of the polythene, accelerating the disintegration process without affecting the packages’ durability.

Encouraging recycling of all forms, Aramex also introduced an internal paper recycling project and recently launched a newspaper recycling project through Ruwwad, the company’s sustainable community development initiative.

Aramex Delivers Strong Results for First Half of 2008

Aramex announced that for the second quarter ending June 30, 2008, revenues rose from AED 437.5 million to AED 539.3 million, resulting in double-digit growth of 23pct over the same period in 2007. Second quarter net profits climbed 15pct to AED 38.4 million, compared to AED 33.5 million for the same period in 2007.

Overall, net profits for the first half of 2008 climbed by 18pct to AED 74.6 million from AED 63.4 million for the first half of 2007. Revenues for the first six months of 2008 also registered 23pct growth, climbing to AED 1033.7 million, from AED 837.0 million for the same period in 2007.

Driven by increases in fuel prices, in addition to escalating operating and overhead costs, Aramex’s total overhead as a percentage of revenues increased to 41pct in the second quarter 2008 compared to 39pct for the same quarter of 2007.

So far, the global logistics provider has been able to achieve its positive results without comprising its strong commitment to environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable business activities.

During the first half of 2008, Aramex was involved in a number of landmark sustainability-related projects, including the introduction of hybrid cars into its ground fleet, and the adoption of eco-friendly packages across all operations.

Aramex is first logistics company in Middle East to use hybrid vehicles

Aramex announced that it has introduced four hybrid cars to its ground fleet, becoming the first logistics company to use hybrid vehicles in the Middle East. The move is part of Aramex’s bid to help reduce its carbon foot print across the region, demonstrating the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability as it takes a step toward its ambitious goal of becoming the industry’s first carbon neutral provider.

At a critical time when high oil prices are putting a strain on the industry, the use of hybrid vehicles not only helps protect the environment, but also provides a cost effective solution to soaring fuel costs.

Using pioneering technology, the environmentally-friendly hybrid vehicles operate on two engines designed to minimise fuel consumption, while reducing the harmful emission of carbon dioxide.

Running on an electric motor and switching to fuel based on the load of the engine, it is estimated that hybrid cars reduce fuel costs and carbon emissions by 50.0 pct.

In-line with the Company’s drive to reduce its impact on the environment, Aramex has switched the majority of its fleet to unleaded fuel and is now looking at ways in which it can make its entire fleet environmentally-friendly.

As part of a comprehensive strategy outlined in its annual Corporate Sustainability Report (CSR), Aramex has set aggressive environmental targets, including the reduction of carbon emissions per shipment by 50.0 pct before 2009.
