China to ratify Seventh Additional Protocol to Constitution of Universal Postal Union

The Seventh Additional Protocol to the Constitution of the Universal Postal Union (CUPU) was expected to be approved by China’s top legislature in a week.

The seventh additional protocol, the seventh revision to the CUPU, is in accordance with the Chinese legal principle, read a statement submitted to the fourth session of the 11th Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) for deliberation on Monday.

The ratification of the seventh additional protocol will benefit the postal service in China in the global changes of economy and technology and enhance cooperation between China and other countries and organizations, the statement added.

The contents of the seventh additional protocol, which was done in Bucharest on Oct. 5, 2004 and came into force on Jan. 1, 2006, included articles concerning the missions of the union and definitions of some terms and some literal revisions to the CUPU.

China joined the CUPU in 1973 and ratified the previous six additional protocols in 1973, 1977, 1987, 1991, 1997 and 2003 respectively. The seventh had been approved by 33 member countries till July 4, 2008.

Money transferring through post offices sees a good start

The postal department saw a good response from clients in the first one month of working as the principal agent of Western Union in Bangladesh.

The department started the service from July 13 this year. It is now operating special counters in 12 post offices in the city and 438 others throughout the country so that people can easily collect remittances sent from abroad.

The post offices that are operating as Western Union points in the capital are Dhaka General Post Office (GPO) and post offices at Sadarghat, New Market, Mohammadpur, Gulshan, Banani, Basabo, Tejgaon, Shantinagar, Khilgaon and Uttara.

According to GPO sources, they are receiving around 5 to 10 clients of Western Union in their counter every day.

When the postal department announced its collaboration with Western Union in January, a good number of people expressed scepticism about the department’s ability to maintain the quality of service.
The postal department signed an agreement in January with the Western Union to deliver money transferred by the global money transferring company as part of a reform programme to help the financially ailing department reach break-even point by 2009.

The designated postal offices will run the special money transferring desks for the next 5 years. Usual fees are collected by the Western Union while the postal department receives 25 percent commission from the money-transferring organisation.

UPS – Alcatel-Lucent agreement

UPS will be the Lead Logistics Provider in Asia for Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Solution Division (ESD), which has expanded its venture in Asia-Pacific with the recent opening of its new 45,600 sq.ft distribution centre in Hong Kong. The facility, being a radio frequency-driven operation, enables real-time transactions and guarantees 100 pct accuracy.

UPS will perform various logistical activities like inbound receiving, storage services, inventory management, pick-and-pack operations, returns management and outbound transportation management.

The activation of the new Hong Kong logistics centre, which is fully dedicated to Alcatel-Lucent ESD, cuts delivery response time by days and reduces direct operating expenses for Alcatel-Lucent. In the past, products were shipped from Europe and the US to customers in Asia.

Since being appointed as contract logistics consultant in 1999, UPS’s relationship with Alcatel-Lucent has led to various signed agreements like the XPO MOU (return logistics with repair vendor management) in July 2003, the XPL contract (4PL contract for logistics distribution with one DC in France) in August 2003 and the LOGOS contract (4PL contract for logistics distribution with one DC in France and one RDC in Hong Kong) in April 2008.

TNT completes integration of Speedage

TNT is rebranding its India-based domestic road express arm from Speedage to TNT. The name change shows the successful integration of Speedage, a company TNT acquired in September 2006, into TNT’s global express network. Operating under a single brand will support TNT’s strategy to become the market leader in the Indian market for domestic and international express services, using an integrated air and road network.

“This is the first acquisition in India by one of the top four express players to be rebranded. We now offer customers a single point solution for international air, domestic next day and domestic day-definite services, using an integrated air-road network”, says Abhik Mitra, Managing Director, TNT India.

The rebranding will be accompanied by the set up of a single Customer contact number. The name change will encompass signage, vehicles, uniforms, the website, and every touch point where the brand is visible. A single brand gives more visibility to the company, its products and services.

Headquartered in Bangalore, TNT India has 3,500 employees, 614 depots, 29 hubs and 1,546 road line-haul vehicles all over India.

Revamped Asia-Pacific web site makes shipping even easier

FedEx Express has enhanced its Web-based shipping tool, FedEx Ship Manager at fedex.com, and its online service portal, fedex.com, creating a more simplified user-interface to make shipping faster and even more convenient for FedEx customers across the Asia-Pacific region.
The redesigned FedEx Ship Manager at fedex.com streamlines all required shipping information input into a single shipment process form, and includes a direct access to Microsoft Outlook address book and predictive typing feature. In addition, it supports FedEx International Economy (IE) service. Hence IE customers can enjoy the convenience of tracking the status of their shipment online. The customer experience is further enhanced with the introduction of a new “Pending Shipment” function, which allows customers to save their yet–to-be-completed shipment information for use at a later time.
The new FedEx Ship Manager is available in Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, Guam, Macau, Vietnam, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, mainland China and Hong Kong.
