Toll purchase of Courier Australia boost to WA presence

Toll Holdings has reached an agreement on the purchase of West Australian
based Courier Australia.

Courier Australia is a Courier and Express transport and logistics group, based in
Western Australia. It was established in 1959 and employs about 600 staff and
independent contractors in that state. Courier Australia has a strong regional
network in Western Australia which will add scale to some of Toll’s existing
courier and express businesses.

Eco-friendly electric delivery vans launched in Wuhan (PRC)

TNT and Dongfeng Automotvies yesterday launched trials of China’s first two zero-emissions electric delivery vans in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province.

The electric delivery vans are powered by rechargeable batteries and do not use any petrol. They will operate emission-free in the central city areas of Wuhan, servicing the express delivery needs of TNT’s customers. TNT’s CEO Peter Bakker said that the trial launch of China’s first two electric delivery vans is significant as it will be the first market outside of Europe that TNT is undertaking these trials.

He said the trials will reduce CO2 emissions from their own delivery fleet, and that that they would establish six new international express service locations in China this year and plan to also establish a network linking China, Vietnam and Singapore. Peter Bakker said that electric delivery vans are designed mainly to provide short-distance and intra-city express services.

Although electric delivery vans are still expensive in terms of research and development costs, Peter Bakker emphasized that they are cheap to maintain and thus beneficial for the long-term interests of both consumers and for environmental protection.

DHL opens warehouse at Devanahalli airport (India)

DHL inaugurated its 1,255 sq. m. bonded warehouse at the new airport at Devanahalli. The facility at the cargo terminal will be operated by DHL Global Forwarding. DHL is fully owned by Deutsche Post World Net. The company has leased bonded space from the cargo terminal managed by Air India-SATS. The facility includes an airfreight office and employs 50 personnel.

Tony Widmer, Head of Air Freight, DHL Global Forwarding, said the company had a 24 per cent share of the market for goods flowing through the existing HAL airport in Bangalore. He expects the company to grow by about 20 per cent in the current year.

Madhav Thapar, Sub-Regional Air Freight Director, DHL Global Forwarding, said the facility would cater to the needs of exporters and importers in South Indian States. These States, he said, accounted for “50 per cent of the company’s.

Toll Group acquires New Zealand’s United Carriers

Toll Holdings signed a conditional purchase agreement for the business
of United Carriers a Northland trucking company with an annual turnover of
approximately NZD 50 million.

United Carriers employs 360 staff and has a fleet of 220 trucks. It has businesses
in a range of logistics sectors including general freight, livestock, logging,
warehousing and international freight forwarding.

“United is a very complimentary acquisition for Toll. It expands our existing
businesses in New Zealand into Northland where our presence was previously
limited,” said Toll Holdings Managing Director Mr Paul Little.

“While Toll now has a presence in 44 countries around the world, this acquisition
will further boost our presence in New Zealand. It also reaffirms our commitment
to the New Zealand market following Monday’s announcement of the sale of the
rail operating business to the New Zealand Government.

“The purchase will be funded from working capital and is another demonstration
of Toll’s capacity to acquire quality assets as opportunities present themselves.

“United Carriers will especially add significant value to Toll’s inter-modal road and
rail business,” Mr Little said.

The New Zealand Overseas Investment Commission has cleared the purchase
which is expected to be completed next month.

Capgemini and ProLogis launch North American case study report on the supply chain implications from manufacturing offshoring to China and India

The quest to produce or provide a product at the lowest possible price, while simultaneously maintaining product quality and integrity, has driven many North American enterprises overseas, particularly to Asia. While outsourcing overseas is not a new phenomenon, it has now become possible to analyze and qualify the processes that have made these offshore ventures successful and profitable. This study aims to identify the specific impacts to the physical distribution supply chain of North American businesses when outsourcing to China and India. By interviewing high-level executives from North American companies currently operating in China and/or India, this document provides a “lessons learned” guide focusing on the current state of operations, risk mitigation and predictions for future developments.

Outsourcing manufacturing to China to reduce costs in the supply chain is by no means a new development. In fact, there are companies in North America that have been successfully offshoring to China for as long as 40 years. Their unique challenges have evolved as the capabilities within China have matured. By comparison, the outsourcing of manufacturing to India is relatively new, gaining a foothold within the past seven years. While India has become a master in the area of information technology outsourcing, the supply chain processes related to manufacturing outsourcing continue to be a challenge and obstacle for many North American companies.
