Expansion of postal network in India

The Franchisee Scheme which entails setting up of Franchisee Outlets of postal network is already in existence. The Franchisee Scheme was launched in February 2007 in select urban areas for providing increased access to postal counter services in areas where opening of a Post Office was not possible as per prescribed norms. The scheme has now been extended to cover areas of new upcoming urban townships, special economic zones, major highway projects, upcoming new industrial centres, colleges, etc. The opening of Franchisee Outlets is in addition to opening of Post Offices wherever justified.

Unemployed youth are not debarred from working as Franchisees of the Department. The applicant in this regard should fulfill the criteria for selection, such as minimum age requirement, educational qualification, etc. Criteria for selection of Franchisees are in view of the need to select persons with capacity to manage and market a range of products, along with a sense of the community needs and public aspects of the job and willingness to accept technological options. The preference is given to postal pensioners and those able to provide computers.

DHL introduces "green" service Asia Pacific

DHL launched an Asia Pacific service allowing clients to offset the carbon emissions generated by transporting their shipments.

DHL said in a statement from its regional headquarters in Singapore that customers who want to use the firm’s new DHL GOGREEN EXPRESS service are asked to pay a 3.0 per cent “green premium” on top of the standard charges.

The company then calculates the carbon emissions generated as a result of transporting the parcel and offset these by reinvesting in environmentally friendly projects such as fuel vehicle technology, solar panels and reforestation.

DHL said customers can choose to send all or just a selection of their shipments under the carbon-offsetting scheme which aims to help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.

Switzerland-based Societe Generale de Surveillance, an independent certifying body, will verify the programme annually to ensure accountability and transparency, DHL said.

Customers will also receive a certificate from DHL yearly stating the total amount of carbon dioxide offset on their behalf. The certificate can be useful for companies reporting how they are cutting their carbon emissions.

The service is available to DHL customers in Europe and this is the first time the company is introducing it in the Asia Pacific.

Barclays launches mobile banking service in India

UK bank Barclays has launched a mobile banking service in India that enables customers to transfer funds, pay bills and make account enquiries using their handsets.

The new m-banking service – called Hello Money – will cost customers Rs30 a month.

Customers signed up to the service dial a number before entering a PIN and choosing the option they want from a Hindi or English menu.

Hello Money is available through all GSM handsets on the Airtel, Vodafone and Idea networks in 40 Indian cities. The bank is looking to extend the service to CDMA handsets in the future.

Barclays says the system – which is based on ‘unstructured supplementary service data’ (USSD) technology – is easier to use than SMS and GPRS mobile banking services, which often involve several steps such as application downloads and can be costly as customers are charged for SMS or GPRS subscription every time they use the service.

The bank says its new m-bankig system can bring financial services to India’s 184 million unbanked population.
