India Department of Posts to mechanise sorting system

As part of modernisation drive, the Department of Posts (DoP) will mechanise its sorting system in metros and other cities, set up national mail grid and take four aircraft on lease to deliver mails in the quickest possible time.

“Currently, Chennai and Mumbai Circles have machines that are 10 years old and have not reached their full capacity. Besides, they do not have higher capacity. With manual intervention around 2,000 mails are being sorted out in seven and a half hours daily, whereas the sorting machines in Italy and the U.S. have capacities to sort out around 40,000 to 50,000 mails a day,” Postal Services Board Member (Operation and Marketing) K. Noorjehan told The Hindu on Wednesday.

Apart from China, Postal Services departments in major countries use both bar-coding and optical character recognition (OCR) method to sort out mails. India will use both technologies, since it has several languages and character recognition is complicated in certain cases.

PhilPost-8 now accepts cargo services

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PhilPost), Region 8 headed by Regional Director Fabioleta P. Ferraris is proud to announce that their office now accepts transport of cargoes from one city or municipality to another for a minimal fee.

According to PhilPost Information Officer Designate Oscar E. Bioco, said postal service is facilitated through their mail service vehicle to and from the following post office points: Tacloban City – Ormoc City and way offices; Ormoc – Kanaga – Palompon – Isabel – Merida and way offices; Tacloban – Catbalogan, Samar – Calbayog City – Catarman, Northern Samar and way offices; and Tacloban – Borongan, Eastern Samar way offices.

Bioco added that other postal points are: Ormoc – Albuera – Baybay City; Tacloban – Baybay – Maasin and way offices; Maasin – Sogod, Souther Leyte and way offices; Sogod – Silago – Abuyog – Tacloban and way offices; Guiuan, Eastern Samar – Borongan, Eastern Samar; and lastly, Borongan – Oras, Eastern Samar and way offices.

Interested parties who want to avail of this cargo service, known as Priority Express or PREX, are required to inform the consignee to pick up said cargo at the post office destination point. Bioco said that Philpost guarantee’s a same day delivery of items posted within the specified cut-off time.

China Postal Savings Bank opens 20th provincial-level branch

China Postal Savings Bank (CPSB) opened a provincial-level branch in eastern Zhejiang province on Wednesday, bringing the number of provinces in which it can conduct a full range of financial services to 20.

With 1,500 post office outlets already established in Zhejiang, CPSB, now China’s fifth largest commercial bank in terms of deposits following its inauguration nine months ago, will be able to provide credit card business, loans and financial management services in both urban and rural areas, according to a branch spokesman.

Post offices in China began to offer postal savings services in1986 but until now were not authorized to provide lending or credit card services.

There are 36,000 post office outlets nationwide, almost 60 percent of them in rural areas, and 270 million account holders.

CPSB has been officially approved to establish branches at all levels around the country, including 34 provincial-level branches and over 20,000 sub-branches, the China Banking Regulatory Commission said.

The bank’s governor Tao Liming previously said it aimed to open all its provincial-level branches by the end of this month.

By the end of October, CPSB had registered 1.7 trillion yuan (about 233 billion U.S. dollars) in deposits.

CPSB was inaugurated last March representing a substantial step forward in China’s financial reform and is expected to improve financial services in the country’s rural areas.

Fund transfers for Mongolians get faster

Mongolians workers in Korea can now send money to their home country much faster than before.

The Korea Post launched Monday (Jan.7) the so-called Eurogiro service with Mongolia, which enables people in Korea to wire money to Mongolia within three to five days using an electronic money transfer system.

Eurogiro is a fast and cost-effective electronic transaction system that easily allows cross-border transfers of funds.

Users can directly send money to the recipient’s home address through the system or deposit money into an account issued by a postal office to transfer funds.

Previously wiring money to Mongolia from Korea had taken much longer, because users first had to get a certificate of money exchange from Mongolia and then send money by mail.

With the launch of the service, Mongolia is the third country to use Eurogiro with Korea, following Japan and Switzerland. The Korea Post plans to further expand the number of countries to use the service with.

60 countries are members of the Eurogiro network.

Torok retiring as Head of UPS Asia; Derek Woodward named as successor

Ken Torok, who for the past five years has guided UPS’s Asia Pacific operations, will retire this spring and be replaced by Derek Woodward, a long-time UPS manager who currently works as one of Torok’s top deputies.

Woodward, 45, is a Canadian native who joined UPS in 1985 as a part-time package sorter and then driver. Seventeen of his 23 years in the transportation and logistics industry have been spent working outside North America for UPS in a wide variety of marketing, business development and sales positions. He moved to Singapore last year to serve as a senior vice president to Torok, responsible for all staff functions for the Asia Pacific Region.

The succession will take effect on April 1.
