Pitney Bowes Expands Presence in Singapore and Malaysia

Pitney Bowes Inc. announced today that it has entered into an agreement to acquire the Pitney Bowes business division, including inventory, and stocks, equipment, customers, employees and other assets of CL Computers Pte Limited and CL Computers (M) Sdn Bhd., the company that has served as its distributor for the mailstream markets in Singapore and Malaysia.
CL Computers, now a major supplier of electronic banking equipment, was founded in 1985 and initially served as a distributor for computer products. Pitney Bowes appointed the company as its distributor in Malaysia and Singapore in 1998, and CL Computers now serves thousands of mailstream customers in the banking, insurance and logistics industries from offices in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and other locations.
The acquisition follows the recent official opening in Singapore of Pitney Bowes’s regional headquarters for Asia-Pacific and Middle East (APME) operations, under the leadership of APME President Eric-Yves Mahe. Mahe has publicly stated the company’s desire to expand dramatically across the region, potentially doubling sales within the next five years.
“Mailstream technology has long delivered substantial value to large customers in North America and Europe,” said Mahe. “With our strong base in developed markets such as Australia, New Zealand and Japan, we feel we are well positioned to deliver these same benefits to forward-thinking customers in emerging markets as well. The recent liberalization of the Singapore postal sector and the impending liberalization contemplated for the region also present strong opportunities for Pitney Bowes.”
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

DHL install new automated sorting system at Chubu Gateway, Japan

DHL, today installed an automated sorting system for parcels at the Chubu Gateway at Central Japan International Airport, a dedicated facility providing DHL customers with bonded warehousing and customs clearance processing at one convenient location. This installation is part of DHL’s commitment to invest an additional 11 billion yen (USD 90 million) in Japan over the next few years, and comes on the heels of the inauguration of the expanded DHL Kansai International Airport Gateway in June this year.

The processing capacity of the new automated sorting system at the Chubu Gateway is 7,500 pieces per hour, expanding capacity to approximately three times the volume possible with standard manual sorting. The automated sorting system accommodates the growing volume of cargo handled in the Chubu area, especially for trade between Japan and China, and promotes the effective utilization of the Gateway – complementary to DHL’s other Japan Gateways at the Narita International Airport and Kansai International Airport – through the enhancement of shipment processing speed and service quality.

With the opening of the Central Japan International Airport in 2005, DHL has made substantial investments in the Chubu area. The Chubu Gateway was opened in March 2006, joining the six service centers established in the Tokai and Hokuriku regions since 2005. In October 2006, Air Hong Kong – DHL’s joint venture with Cathay Pacific – began operating a five-time-weekly dedicated service connecting the Central Japan International Airport to DHL’s Central Asia Hub in Hong Kong, expanding transport capability and fortifying next-day delivery services between the two regions. Based on this strengthening of both ground and air networks, a greater number of locations in the Tokai and Hokuriku regions now enjoy same-day pick-up and same-day delivery services, reducing transport times by as much as one day.

Technology developed by Mysore PTC to be launched on January 1, 2008

Mysore is likely to emerge as a “technology hub” for postal services in South Asia. With the Postal Training Centre (PTC) here already in the forefront of developing innovative technologies for the improvement of postal administration in 22 postal circles across the country, India Post is strongly vying for bringing the proposed South Asian Postal Technology Centre to Mysore.

India Post has sent a formal request to the Bern-based Universal Postal Union (UPU) and the Asia Pacific Postal Centre in Bangkok for considering Mysore as the venue for establishing the premier centre to train officers from South Asian countries in developing state-of-the-art technology in postal matters.

As a first step, India Post, which functions under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India, is establishing the National Postal Technology Centre on the premises of PTC in Mysore. The centre, which will be one of its kind, will be developed as a “centre of excellence” to impart specialised training to the personnel of postal circles in developing technologies such as developing software and custom-made computers to suit postal services.

The Mysore PTC has been training postal employees from several African countries and Thailand. Significantly, the postal departments in countries such as Nepal, the Maldives and Bhutan are using the software developed by the PTC to improve their postal administration.

Korea Express sale attracts 10 bidders: court

Korea Express has attracted 10 bidders, an official at a South Korean court said on last Tuesday 11th December, in a sale that analysts say could fetch up to USD 2.2 billion.

The deal would be the biggest acquisition in the country’s transportation sector and also provide hefty fees for investment banks advising a list of major South Korean companies interested in bidding.

The official said the creditors of the logistics firm will allow the preliminary bidders to conduct due diligence from December 17 to January 4 before submitting a formal bid on January 11.

Korea Express declined to comment.

Local news provider MoneyToday said the bidders include transport groups such as Kumho Asiana, Hanjin Group HANJ.UL, the parent of Korean Air, Hyundai Heavy Industries and STX Corp, as well as retail giant CJ Corp.

Korea Express, in which Goldman Sachs is the biggest shareholder, plans to sell a 50 percent stake plus one share to a buyer by issuing new shares.

Korea Express picked in October a consortium consisting of Merrill Lynch and Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers to manage the sale.

The logistics firm has been placed under court receivership since 2000 due to its debt guarantees for bankrupt former affiliate Dong Ah Construction.

Shares in Korea Express rose 2.0 percent to 102,000 won, compared with a 0.98 percent rise in the broader market .

FedEx Opens First Station in Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture

FedEx Express opened its first station, Kameyama Station, in Kameyama City, Mie prefecture. This is FedEx’s 24th station in Japan.

The station has been opened to meet anticipated demand for international express services for industries such as liquid crystal business and automotive business in the Kameyama City area. The opening of the Kameyama Station enables FedEx to offer its own pickup and delivery services in Kameyama City and Matsuzaka City.

With same-day customs clearance, FedEx is able to shorten the delivery time to the customer by one business day and the packages will be delivered to major cities in North America, Asia and Europe within the next business day. FedEx will provide next-business day delivery to major Asian cities as well, for existing service areas including Tsu City*, Kuwana City, Mie-gun Komono-cho, Kawagoe-cho, Asahi-cho,Yokkaichi City and Suzuka City, which were previously handled by Nagoya station. The cut-off time for same-day flight services is 2 p.m. (and as late as 4 p.m. in some areas).

Shipments from Kameyama Station are sent to Kansai International Airport, where they are loaded onto FedEx aircraft and delivered to major cities in North America, Asia and Europe within the next business day. Shipments from major cities in North America, Europe and Asia are delivered to customers in Japan the next business day, after arriving at Kansai International Airport and being cleared through customs and sorted.

*Some locations are excluded.
