India: Post Office to have largest ATM network

NCR Corporation India, the automatic teller machine (ATM) manufacturer, is eyeing post office savings accounts as its growth area in the coming days.

Apart from commercial banks’ expanding ATM network, the company has identified the Indian Post, which has small savings account almost equal to all the banks taken together, as its next growth area.

“Worldwide, we are working with post offices. In India also we see them as high potential growth area,” the company’s Vice President (Global Operations), Rick Marquardt, told reporters here. In order to meet the increasing demand the company foresees in the domestic market, it has expanded its existing capacity from approximately 250-300 machines per day to 800-900 machines.

The new plant, set up adjacent to its existing plant in Puducherry, was inaugurated recently by Rick Marquardt.

C. Sivaramane, General Manager in India, said that the plant would also manufacture components that would be exported to the company’s manufacturing facilities in Hungary and China. Till date, NCR has invested USD 3.7 million (approximately Rs 15 crore) in India.

“We started manufacturing ATMs in India five years ago and till date have supplied to all the major banks in the country. The largest public sector bank, State Bank of India, has taken around 3,000 machines from us, followed by Canara Bank (1,000 machines),” Sivaramane said, adding that NCR was working on technologies through which ATMs could be used for mobile top-ups and ticketing.

In case of mobile top-ups, the mobile phone user can go to the ATM and after activating the machine with his password has to enter his mobile number.

The machine would immediately check his account balance and deduct the amount and his phone would be recharged while ticketing through the ATM would be something like e-ticketing, he explained.

Postal System to Be Exported to Central Asia

Korea Post is to help Mongolia and Kazakhstan modernize their postal networks by sharing its experience in setting up one of the world’s most efficient logistic networks, and by introducing advanced mail-handling systems developed by South Korean IT firms.

The representatives, including Jung Kyung-won, president of Korea Post, will sign a partnership pact and will draw a blueprint of modernizing the Central Asian postal network, it said.

The forming of the committee will be a gateway for Korea’s system developers to make inroads into the developing markets in the region, where the mail services are still in their rudimentary stages compared to their Eastern neighborhoods. It can become a breakthrough because the domestic market has already begun to shrink due to the increasing use of e-mail and other electronic communication tools.

Korea Post is considered one of the world’s most advanced and efficient mail handling systems. It spent more than 16 billion won between 2002 and 2004 on establishing the electronic mail logistics system called PostNet. This May, PostNet was recognized as the best postal technology in the world by the World Mail Award, which was organized by a British consulting firm Triangle.

The government’s investment in upgrading Korea’s postal system also nurtured its private sector as well. Some 30 companies are now providing various types of goods and services for the postal network, such as an automatic sorting system, labeling system, delivery scheduling software and hand-carry information system for mailmen.

Among them, LG CNS will be taking charge of Mongolia’s postal modernization project, and SK C&C will bid for the Kazakhstan project, the agency said.

Japan Post Holdings, Nippon Express to Form Alliance in Parcel Delivery Service

Japan Post Holdings Co., the recently privatized postal service, and delivery company Nippon Express Co. said Friday they have agreed to form a comprehensive business alliance.

As a start, the two companies will integrate their domestic parcel delivery operations beginning next October, they said in a joint statement.

The move is expected to help boost their competitiveness against industry leaders Yamato Transport Co. and Sagawa Express Co.

The alliance is the first major tie-up for Japan Post since the company was established Monday as part of the nation’s 10-year postal privatization plan.

Nippon Express, the nation’s No. 3 package delivery company, and Japan Post, which is the fourth-largest in the service, will set up a new company on Oct. 1, 2008, to integrate their delivery business. They are also seeking tie-ups in other areas to use their expertise, the companies said.

The new company will be a subsidiary of either Japan Post Holdings or its delivery unit, Japan Post Service Co.

Nippon Express has stepped up efforts to form partnerships to better compete with its rivals. The company said in August that it was considering joint air transport services with Kintetsu World Express Inc. between Japan and other Asian countries.

Under the postal privatization plan, the parent Japan Post was broken into four separate businesses initially held under a government-controlled holding company: an insurance company, savings bank, mail courier and post office management firm. The companies will be made independent by 2017 and listed on stock markets.
