NESDB says local logistics firms must fight together against global giants

Local logistics service providers need to seek strategic alliances if they want to survive in face of tougher competition, according to the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB).

Most of the 2,000 Thai logistics service providers are small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) whose budgets for overseas network expansion are limited, according to Suriyon Thunkijjanukij, director of the NESDB’s Logistics Strategy Division.

As such, it is difficult for them to provide door-to-door services in other countries like global players DHL, FedEx and UPS.
In seeking foreign partners, local logistics operators should look for SMEs whose businesses can complement their expertise in niche areas. For example, if one company already has a good reputation for reliable sea shipments from Thailand to China, its business partner could be someone who are keen on providing door-to-door service in China, instead of someone based in Europe with little knowledge about East Asia, said Mr Suriyon.

Although Thai logistics companies may find it hard to survive overseas, they could be the service providers of choice for local shipments.

While international operators may enjoy several advantages, Thai logistics companies know better how to deal with traffic conditions and authorities on highways, said Mr Suriyon. Mr Suriyon also suggested the private sector to form a cluster of logistics service providers with the support from various ministries, like transport, industry and commerce, to enhance competitiveness.

DHL, VNPT replace agency agreement with joint venture

DHL, a leading express and logistics company, and Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group today announced its new joint venture, reinforcing the companies’ belief and commitment to the rapidly developing Vietnamese market. It was also a developmental watershed in the Vietnamese Express Industry, with the partnership between the world’s leading express provider and one of Vietnam’s largest State-owned enterprises, he added.

The DHL-VNPT Express Ltd joint venture application was licensed by the Ministry of Planning and Investment on September 27, and replaces the 18-year-old Agency Agreement that the two parties had operated under in the past.

DHL is the first international express company to announce a joint venture with VNPT in Vietnam. The new license will have no impact on existing customers, who will continue to enjoy uninterrupted DHL Express services during the period of transition.

The license showed Vietnam’s commitment to opening its economy and complying with international rules, said Nguyen Bich Dat, vice minister of Planning and Investment.

He hopes that the joint venture will be an important bridge between Vietnamese enterprises and foreign counterparts, contributing to better trade relationship between Vietnam and the world-wide community. – VNS

DHL to expand in Korea

DHL plans to invest about USD50 million to boost capacity and improve service in South Korea.

The bulk of the investment will go toward expanding its current DHL Express facility at the Incheon International Airport, said Scott Price, chief executive for DHL Express in the Asia-Pacific region.

“DHL will also invest in the upgrading and expansion of its service centers, including technological innovation and more than 100 new vehicles, in Korea,” the Korea Times quoted Price as saying. Price was in Inchon to participate in the International Transport & Logistics Fair 2006 at BEXCO.

DHL’s investment plan complements the South Korean government’s vision of establishing Inchon as a preferred logistics hub to serve the region, he said.

According to the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, air-cargo volumes between Korea and the neighboring region has increased by an average annual rate of 30 percent, led by freight traffic between Korea and China.

“Our commitment in Korea is largely driven by customer needs arising from the steady flow of trade volumes into and out of South Korea,” Price said.

The existing DHL Express facility in Inchon is operating beyond capacity. DHL has to expand its existing 2,000 square meter facility to meet projected growth estimated by Incheon International Airport Corp. 7 million tons of air cargo by 2020.

DHL’s infrastructure development plans involve the consolidation of existing service centers and upgrading of other facilities to offer customers enhanced operational and service capabilities.
