GeoPost may pick 10% in DTDC

Geopost of France may pick up 10% stake in Bangalore-based courier and express company DTDC, in which Anil Ambani-controlled Reliance Capital holds 40%.

Subhasish Chakraborty, chairman and managing director of DTDC, who along with his family, currently holds 60% and management control, is expected to dilute stake to 50%.

Mr Chakraborty told ET said he is in talks with a few international players for a tie-up. But he refused to divulge further details.

One of the three leading players in the domestic industry, DTDC is steadily increasing its foreign presence. It has already set up its own network in all Saarc countries, the US and the UK. Recently, it tied up with a Pakistani company ACB Care, and signed an agreement with the Chinese Kerry Logistics, to foray into two growing markets in terms of India’s bilateral trade.

DTDC now enjoys a network of 3,700 centres comprising franchisees and own offices, and clocked revenues of Rs 125 crore on standalone basis during last financial year, and Rs 250 crore cumulatively with franchisee revenues. DTDC now aims to grow to Rs 500 crore revenues by ’10.

Sources said DTDC is also looking at taking over small regional players to grow in the domestic market. It had initiated negotiations with Mumbai-based Speedage Express Cargo Services, but Speedage was subsequently taken over by TNT last week. Sources said DTDC would soon announce a few mergers that will propel the company into the top league in the domestic market.

DHL Malaysia gains from diversified client base

DHL Malaysia expects double-digit growth in sales for this year and 2007, driven by growing demand from companies of all sizes to export packages. “We did not consciously work for a diversified portfolio but our customers cut across so many segments that we ended up with it. What this means for DHL is that when the economy goes down one way, another part will go up, so we are able to balance our portfolio,” newly appointed DHL Malaysia country manager Sam Leong told reporters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Leong has been working for DHL for more than 22 years, and was previously DHL Seoul’s country operations director.

He said Malaysia is a key market in Asia Pacific for the DHL network. DHL has a 42 per cent share of the express cargo market here. DHL is available in 60 locations nationwide, including gateways, offices, service centres, terminals and warehouses, and three retail outlets. The retail outlet was set up in response to customer feedback requesting for an outlet in high density areas for convenience. Leong said the venture into retail has been very successful so far, and the company will look for other areas where similar retail outlets can be set up. “We are doing a lot of studies to pin point the right location,” he added.

DHL projects double-digit revenue growth in FY07

DHL Express has projected a double-digit revenue growth for 2006 and 2007 for its Malaysian operations, as the country continues to be one of its key markets in the Asia Pacific region, its country manager for Malaysia Sam Leong said.

He based this on DHL’s view of Malaysia being able to continue to attract investments that would benefit the company.

“(Revenue) Growth is extremely healthy. We are targeting double digit growth this year and next year,” he said at a media luncheon with DHL Express Malaysia senior management in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 5.
Leong said DHL Express, which has a 42% market share in the air express business in Malaysia, believes that it can build up its market share in certain segments.

An area, which the company hopes to develop is the retail sector where the company intends to open more of its ServicePoint outlets in the Klang Valley.

DHL recently said it would increase the number of ServicePoint outlets to 11 from the current three over the next three years in key cities in Malaysia, including converting some of the DHL centres at strategic locations.

Such outlets would help strengthen DHL’s existing network and expand its customer base, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Home Delivery of Rail Tickets from September 6 in Pakistan

Pakistan Railway Advisory and Consultancy Services (Pracs) has taken a revolutionary step initiating ‘home delivery’ of reservation tickets from September 6, 2006.

Initially, the home delivery facility is being provided in four cities of Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi/Islamabad and Faisalabad and it will be expanded to other cities later. Under the system devised, an intending railway traveller could have his seat/seats reserved on one telephone call for a train 24 hours prior to its departure. Once the seat is reserved, the ticket will be delivered to the passenger at his home address through Pracs courier. Pracs Managing Director, Mohammed Ashfaq Khattak, told APP on Monday that home delivery service will save the people living in distanced areas from visiting railway reservation offices, which consume much of time and then queuing up outside the reservation counter to get a ticket.

He said that for this ‘big service’ the Pracs would charge only Rs20 per ticket delivered within the municipal limit and Rs30 per ticket beyond the specified limit like Landhi and Hawks Bay in Karachi.
