Teleservice centre at post office

The Department of Posts inaugurated its new teleservice centre at Bangalore General Post Office here on Thursday. The centre, touted to be the first of its kind in India, will act as the nodal office for various new services offered and pioneered by the Karnataka Circle. S. Ramaganapathy, Chief General Manager (Telecom), Bharath Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), inaugurated the services for address verification and e-payments offered by the centre.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India regulations stipulated that all telephone service providers should verify customer addresses for authorising a connection, he said. “In BSNL, we have outsourced the address verification service to the Department of Posts, considering its experience in leveraging its resources,” he said.

The address verification service is being offered by the postal department to telecom companies, banks, and credit card companies, among other organisations which require address verification.

More FedEx flights to China and rising travel demand likely to keep lid on airline losses, IATA says

FedEx Express has been granted permission by the U.S. Department of Transportation to start additional weekly flights to China, bringing its total to 30, The Associated Press reported from Memphis, Tennessee.

The additions, which will go into effect next March, will allow FedEx Express to operate more all-cargo flights to and from China than any other U.S. airline.

FedEx this year announced a $400 million agreement to bolster its presence throughout Asia by taking full control of a 50 percent joint venture begun in 1999 with Tianjin Datian W. Group.

The joint venture handles international package shipments to and from China, and FedEx’s partner, which goes by the name DTW Group, also operates a domestic delivery network with 89 locations in cities across China.

FedEx said it hoped to complete the acquisition during its 2007 fiscal year, which began in June. The operation will become part of FedEx Express, the company said.

Modernised postal service soon

The Posts and Telecommunications Ministry has decided to modernise the Postal Service and provide a better and speedier service to the public under a Japanese aid scheme.

This follows a resolution adopted by the Asia-Pacific Postal Union at a meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia recently, said a press release issued by the Ministry.

The resolution said the Sri Lanka Postal Service should gain priority for development and modernisation over all other postal services in Asian Countries considering Sri Lanka’s high literacy rate, enormity of the mail and the country’s stable rate of economic development.

Following the resolution the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) agreed to provide the feasibility study for the modernisation and development programme.

A team of officials from Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation and Philippines Ravo International Corporation visited Sri Lanka and held discussions with Posts and Telecommunications Minister D. M. Jayaratne as a prelude to the preparation of the feasibility report.

Once the feasibility report is submitted the Ministry will give its rulings about the relevant proposals and the project will be implemented under the supervision of the World Postal union and assistance of the Asia-Pacific Postal Union.

The release said almost 90 per cent of the Postal Department’s income is generated by 20 per cent of the Post offices which come under Grade One category. These post offices will be given better equipment and facilities during the modernisation programme.
