Revenue of postal services rises

Revenue of Indian postal services has increased to Rs 4431.85 crore in 2004-05 from Rs 3297 crore in 2000-01. The volumes of ordinary mail has been reduced due to advent of technology (emails and cheaper telephone calls), however the Indian post has registered an increase in revenues on back of higher traffic of business post. Speed post, the courier service of Indian Postal Department, has seen a 16.08 per cent rise in traffic and 18.7 per cent increase in revenue while business post saw a 29.5 per cent increase in revenue. On the other hand, the volume of traditional unregistered post has fallen. A new scheme for speed post service called ‘One India One Rate’ has been launched. Priced at Rs 25 for mail up to 50 grams to any destination in the country, it is intended to tap inter-state document services and benefit the customers.

DHL Global Forwarding opens USD 3 million Logistics Facility at Cengkareng

DHL Global Forwarding, the air and ocean freight arm of DHL, today reaffirmed its long-term commitment in Indonesia with the opening of a USD 3 million state-of-the-art facility at Soewarna Business Park in Cengkareng, Jakarta.
The new 6,000-square meter facility will consolidate DHL Global Forwarding’s Jakarta logistics, office and administration operations into a single location, becoming DHL Global Forwarding’s largest office and logistics complex in Indonesia. The new facility complements DHL Global Forwarding’s existing network of seven offices and warehouses in Indonesia, including the recently opened logistics centers in Sunter and Balikpapan.
Located just minutes away from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and less than 30 minutes from Tanjung Priok port, the new facility will provide a considerable time-to-market competitive advantage, especially for customers in the fast-moving consumer goods, electronics, pharmaceuticals and telecommunications industries.

DHL Qatar named Best Agent of British Airways World Cargo

DHL Qatar, part of the international express and logistics solutions provider DHL, was awarded the Best Agent prize of the British Airways World Cargo division.

The award reflects DHL Qatar’s contribution to the growth of the commercial exchange between Qatar and the UK.

DHL Qatar recently launched an expansion investment plan worth 10 mln riyals (USD 2.75 mln/2.15 mln euro), aimed at widening its outlet network and innovating its express services.

Time Definite, which provides door-to-door delivery by an appointed time, is the most popular service among Qatari residents, the company said.

DHL (www.dhl.com), fully owned by Deutsche Post World Net since 2002, opened its first office in Qatar in 1979. At present, DHL Qatar employs 97 people and operates more than 25 trucks.

Indian and Chinese express firms link up in alliance

Two leading independent express firms in the fast-growing Indian and Chinese markets, DTDC and Kerry Logistics, have linked up in an alliance to offer direct services. DTDC, boosted by a financially-strong new shareholder, is also reportedly eyeing acquisitions to increase its market share.

Chakraborty also said that DTDC is interested in acquiring companies, mostly smaller regional and local operators, to increase its position in the Indian express market. The company recently received a financial boost with the acquisition of a 40% holding by Reliance Capital, part of the Anil Ambani business group.

DTDC is the largest competitor to DHL-owned Blue Dart Express and India Post (EMS) in the domestic sector, according to a new “CEP Market Fact Sheet India” produced by CEP-Research.

Kerry Logistics is the parent company of Kerry EAS, one of the larger independent carriers in the domestic Chinese express market with about 100 branches.

US FedEx signs up Vietnam postal company

FedEx, the express delivery company, Monday appointed a Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) affiliate as an authorized agent in Vietnam.
Under the three-year contract, Post Office Express Joint Stock Company (PCN) will mostly handle air cargo services for the US-based company which has had a presence in Vietnam for over a decade.

Dang Thi Bich Hoa, chairwoman and general director of PCN, said the cooperation between a global parcel service provider and a leading Vietnamese express delivery company (80 percent of the domestic market) would mean convenient services for clients.
