Pos Malaysia expands global service network

PosLaju, the national courier arm of Pos Malaysia Bhd, has embarked on an exercise to expand its global service network to 30 new lanes. This brought its total international delivery service destinations to 92 countries across the globe, said Pos Malaysia &Services (POSHB) in a statement today. Pos Malaysia is a wholly-owned subsidiary of POSHB. Delivery to the 30 new destinations under PosLaju’s international courier services, also known as the Expedited Mail Services (EMS), will take effect on Jan 1, 2006. POSHB said delivery of documents and parcels will be priced on average at 22 percent and 43 percent lower respectively compared to other international courier service providers.

Taiwan post office to launch foreign currency exchange

Chunghwa Post Co, Taiwan’s sole postal service provider, will launch foreign currency exchange on Dec. 7 in the latest event that marks a convergence of postal and financial services at Taiwan’s post offices. Starting Dec. 7, 108 branches under Chunghwa Post Co. throughout the island will offer exchange of four foreign currencies – the US dollar, the yen, the euro and the Hong Kong dollar. At the same time, the post offices will sell mutual funds on behalf of local asset management firms. The expansion of post offices into the banking arena has become an irreversible trend. Even Hsu Jen-shou, chairman of Chunghwa Post Co. , said right now 92 percent of the company’s annual sales of NTD300 billion comes from consumer banking, making it no different from a typical financial holding company.

DHL opens new service centre in India

DHL has opened its new service centre in Chennai. The new centre will cater to 43 courier routes operating out of it in 2 cycles, which will nearly double the current shipment handling capacity at the centre. The new centre will also have the DHL Customer Service Centre, which can double up as the disaster recovery site. DHL has over 5,000 customers in Tamil Nadu and Chennai is the third largest market for the company in India.

TNT launches Asia road express service

TNT yesterday launched an Asia road express service which by 2007 will be able to truck small cargo from Singapore to Chinese cities. The new service may also see shippers beginning to opt out of both sea and air freight for some cargo with a more cost effective road transport option. This may result in some losses for both shipping lines and airfreight operators in Asia but TNT, however, sees the service as complementing the region’s well developed air and sea freight routes with the potential of significantly cutting logistics costs for businesses. It has launched what is claimed to be Asia’s first and only integrated network spanning Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, and plans to expand it to link up more than 120 cities across 4,000 kilometres when Vietnam and Cambodia are added in the first half of next year. The global express forwarder hopes to extend the road links eventually to China by 2007.
