China volumes aid UPS results

A doubling in shipments out of China helped UPS increase earnings by a better than expected 22 per cent in the second quarter. Rapid international expansion, especially in Asia, has helped the package delivery and logistics group offset slower growth in the US over recent months. But there were signs in the second quarter that the domestic business was recovering strength, following management restructuring and an increased focus on medium-sized business customers. International export volume rose 18 per cent, helped by “steady” growth in the world economy. Asian exports were up nearly 40 per cent. This month the group announced plans to launch a domestic express delivery service in China and build a new hub for Asian operations in Shangahi.

Reform on China postal system to start in H2 2005

A reform on the Chinese postal system, worked out by the State Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Information Industry, and the State Postal Bureau, is set to start in the second half of 2005 after being prepared for seven years. The reform will focus on separating the administrative functions from enterprise, strengthening governmental supervision, guaranteeing general services and special services and ensuring postal security. To the end China will establish the State Post Administration as the supervision organ and the China Postal Group Corp. to run all kinds of postal services including some core businesses such as mails, EMS, and logistics. A postal depository bank will be set up to regulate financial services in the postal area. China Postal Group Corp. will set up a series of subsidiaries in logistics, saving deposit, EMS, stamps collection, aviation and other industries. The reform plan has been filed to the State Council, the country’s cabinet for an approval.

Couriers urge China Post to relax rules

The Conference of Asia Pacific Express Carriers, or CAPEC, an interest group representing the world’s top express courier firms in Asia, has asked China’s State Post Bureau (China Post) to further lower restrictions and interference in the mainland’s express mail service sector as the regulator is finalizing the amended rules. CAPEC, which represents DHL, FedEx Corp, United Parcel Service and TNT Express, has sent a statement urging China Post to set up a regulatory board separated from its business service department, reduce administrative interference in the industry and increase transparency. “As China is gradually opening its logistics and express market to foreign investors, no major foreign companies want to miss the opportunity to tap the emerging market,” an industry source said.

India Department of Posts launches `Direct Post’

With competition catching up fast, India Post is changing with the times! Coming on top of several new initiatives to provide value additions to its customers, the Department of Posts on Monday launched “Direct Post”. The “Direct Post” service enables a customer to distribute publicity material for marketing a product to a large number of households in a particular area through the post office. The Department of Posts will charge Rs. 1. 50 for each A4 size material, a senior department official told The Hindu.

20 firms propose fund plans for sale via Japan post offices

Japan Post said Friday 20 asset management companies have proposed a total of 23 investment trusts for its plan to sell funds through post offices. Japan Post has solicited fund schemes as it plans to sell three types of low-risk investment trusts — an investment product similar to a mutual fund – through part of its post office network, starting in October.
