Sankyu and Japan Post to start Hong Kong – Japan parcel service

Sankyu Inc. and Japan Post plan on Thursday to start jointly operating a small-lot parcel delivery service from Hong Kong to Japan using marine freighters, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun learned Monday. The new service will be the first of the joint international logistic services by the two firms. Sankyu will pick up parcels in Hong Kong, ship them, then complete their customs clearance in Japan. Japan Post will deliver them using its Yu Pack parcel delivery service network. The two partners expect it to be used for shipping machine and electronic parts as well as mail-order purchases.

DHL head in Asia says ASEAN needs more unity on free trade issues

The head of DHL express delivery in Asia is applauding efforts by Thailand and Singapore to speed up economic reforms in Southeast Asia, but he warns that if the region doesn’t work better as a group, less developed nations will lag farther behind. John Mullen, chief executive officer for DHL Express America, Asia Pacific and emerging markets, said in an interview Saturday with The Associated Press that Southeast Asia has to make it easier for foreign companies to invest in the region. Faster customs procedures are also needed, Mullen said at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in the Laotian capital, Vientiane. “Singapore and Thailand have been really aggressive in leading the charge” for freer markets, he said. “But the disadvantage of that is that if you end up with a two-speed ASEAN, that tends to marginalize the slower-paced countries even further.”

India has potential to match booming China business, FedEx says

FedEx Corp. says its business is expanding strongly across Asia and that India could eventually yield as much business for the world’s top air-express company as China already does. “It’s not just China. You’ve got the whole of the region that’s growing in the strong double-digit range,” said David Cunningham, FedEx’s Asia-Pacific president. The company, which vies against US rival United Parcel Service Inc. and Deutsche Post AG’s DHL Express, has posted explosive growth in its China operations in recent years.

Japan, China, S. Korea postal authorities to seek cooperation

The state-backed Japan Post said Wednesday it has agreed with Chinese and South Korean postal authorities to seek tie-ups in operations such as international remittance and the use of automated teller machines. The agreement was reached as a result of high-level talks of postal officials from the three countries held in Tokyo last Wednesday, Japan Post said. The accord calls for Japan Post, the State Postal Bureau of China and Korea Post to study ways of realizing emergency international remittance, acceptance of international credit cards for use in their ATMs and exchange of information on new postal products and services.
