Japan's mail deliver ops deregulated without private players

Five companies filed applications for a license for restricted mail delivery service with the Japan Posts Ministry on Tuesday, when the ban on private-sector entry into the mail delivery business was lifted. But no applications were filed for the nationwide mail delivery service. The deregulation step is thus expected to do little in promoting competition.

UPS touts new Asia strategy

United Parcel Service Inc., fresh off a global rebranding effort, is unveiling a new approach to logistics in Asia. Dubbed “synchronized commerce,” the strategy treats three core aspects of the supply chain – movement of goods, information on the goods, and funding for those – as a single entity, said Ken Torok, president of UPS Asia Pacific. Saying “synchronized commerce is the next step in the evolution of trade,” Torok said the move is particularly relevant to Asia, where more than 90 percent of the economy comprises small- and medium-sized enterprises.

DHL expects China to become its largest market in Asia Pacific in 3 years

Deutsche Post World Net AG subsidiary DHL said it expects China to become its largest market in the Asia Pacific region within two to three years. Chief operating officer for Asia Pacific John Mullen said the company’s business volume in China is currently growing at a rate of 45-50 pct year-on-year.
Mullen said DHL plans to add some 10-11 collection and distribution points in China this year and invest further in infrastructure and technologies in the region.

Mail volume & demand for postal services keep growing in Malaysia

Contrary to popular opinion, the volume of mail has not gone down since the advent of the fax, e-mail and SMS. Rather, Pos Malaysia is seeing a growth of between three and five per cent every year. According to Pos Malaysia CEO S.M. Haja Alawdin S. Md. Sulaiman, Pos Malaysia handles 1.12 billion items a year, accounting for 3.5 million items a day.
