Foreigners Eye Korea's Postal, Delivery Market

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade [S. Korea] said yesterday that the government will kick off bilateral negotiations for the liberalization of the service sector pertinent to the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) General Agreement on Trade in Services in Geneva July 22-26. According to the ministry, the government will dispatch a group of some 20 officials and experts from nine related government agencies to Geneva to hold negotiations with other WTO member nations, including the United States, Japan, China and the European Union, a ministry official said. Bilateral negotiation is largely a confirming process in which the involved nations ask for additional information of the countries asking for access to their markets.

Japanese Postal services log first profit since '97

Japan’s mail and postal savings services in fiscal 2001 recorded profits for the first time in four years, the Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications Ministry said Friday.
Mail services, including door-to-door parcel delivery, registered profits of 8 billion yen in the year that ended March 31, against losses of 10 billion yen the previous year.
Revenues from the mail business dipped 1.6 percent to 2.21 trillion yen, while expenses dropped 2.3 percent to 2.19 trillion yen.

Traditional mail and e-mail merge at China's Post Offices

China’s postal service will be merging e-mail and traditional mail to accommodate both the people with access to the Internet and those without.
Messages can be e-mailed to China Post for hand delivery – the message will then be printed out, placed in an envelope and delivered.
The number of Internet users in mainland China at the end of last year was 33.7m, which is still only a small proportion of the population.

Vietnam Renews List Of Businesses Not Allowed To Strike

The government has renewed a list of businesses that are not allowed to go on strike.
Under the new list, employees working for electricity production, supply and transmission companies under the Vietnam Electricity Corporation (EVN), postal and telecommunication businesses under the Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Corporation (VNPT), passenger and cargo transportation businesses under the Vietnam Railway Union are not entitled to go on strike.
The list also includes businesses under the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), municipal and provincial public transport and utility businesses, maritime transportation and freight warranty businesses under the Vietnam Maritime Transport Department and the Vietnam National Shipping Lines (VINALINES), air transportation and aviation warranty businesses under the Vietnam Civil Aviation Administration.

FedEx, Blue Dart to part ways in India

FedEx has decided to invest more in India, and break free from the arrangement with Blue Dart Express, India’s largest domestic courier company.
Once their contract expired in September 2002, the world’s largest air express company will go alone to explore the fast-growing Indian logistics market, said industry officials. The US multinational, keen to end its contract, has been in the process of setting up its own infrastructure in India.
