ACCC to consult Australian public about postage stamp price rise

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will hold a series of public forums across Australia this month to discuss a proposal by Australia Post to increase the cost of various postal services, including the price of the basic postage stamp. Australia Post informed the ACCC in April of its intention to increase the price of the basic postage stamp from 45 cents to 50c from January 2003.

First Data Corp. (NYSE: FDC), a global leader in electronic commerce and payment services, today announced that its Western Union Financial Services subsidiary has signed a multi-year contract with Australia’s national postal service. Australia Post, which currently issues Western Union International Money Orders(R), will begin offering Western Union Money Transfer(R) services in each of its approximately 3000 on-line locations by the end of 2002.

Australia Post has beefed-up its service offering, striking a deal with American Express enabling customers to access travellers cheques and foreign exchange through 2,900 postal outlets around Australia.

Post office may acquire NZ courier

Australia Post has emerged as frontrunner to buy Ausdoc’s $NZ200million ($167.2 million) New Zealand courier and express freight business Freightways Express Ltd, in a move that would signal an Australasian expansion strategy by the postal giant.
Ausdoc, a document logistics group, announced on Tuesday that it was in exclusive negotiations to sell the New Zealand business as part of a break-up strategy.
Ausdoc said a binding sales agreement would be reached in the next fortnight.

Australia Post stamp price push

THE cost of a basic postage stamp may rise by 5 from next year and the Howard Government has not given up hope of broader postal system reforms.
Australia Post has applied to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to increase the price of postage for standard letters from 45 to 50 from January 2003.
Australia Post group manager (letters) Gary Lee said the last price increase was 10 years ago and since then, the consumer price index had risen 26 per cent.
