Qantas and Australia Post buy Star Track Express

Australia Post and Qantas have acquired express road freight operator, Star Track Express, for $750 million.

The companies said the purchase would be made through a 50:50 joint venture and funded from net cash reserves and undrawn credit facilities.

Dell ties Australia Post in supply chain

Dell, the global computer manufacturer, has announced a contract with Australia Post for a state of the art supply and delivery operation.

Post Logistics, a division of Australia Post, will distribute Dell’s latest products, printers and ink and toner cartridges to Australian customers.

Dell has chosen Australia to be the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to roll out the printer product line, first launched in the US market in March this year.

Australia Post shops to be franchised

A major overhaul of Australia Post’s branch network is set to take place, with the country’s mail and parcel service provider planning to sell an estimated 150 franchises to private operators for as much as $1m. The private companies will run the post offices in the country’s major cities, using Australia Post’s price schedules, stock and uniforms. The mail provider will repurchase several licensed post offices across Australia and replace them with the new franchises, which will have a similar structure to its existing “Post Shops”.

In just 10 years, Graeme John has transformed Australia Post’s culture and profitability.

Early on a blustery morning in south-eastern Melbourne, Australia Post managing director Graeme John is in the front seat of a chauffeur-driven Holden. He is enthusiastically extolling the virtues of the Dandenong mail centre in Victoria, one of the biggest and most advanced in Australia. Near the centre, he stops and interrupts himself with a mild expletive. On the other side of the road is an Australia Post vehicle, its doors open, and what appear to be brochures strewn over the verge and road for several metres around. The driver of the vehicle, oblivious to who is watching, is hurriedly retrieving the pamphlets. With obvious relief, John observes that although the brochures have to be retrieved and delivered “at least they’re not addressed mail” and his car continues to the gates of the Dandenong facility.
