OZtion extends online identity verification via Australia Post 100 point check

OZtion, Australia’s second largest online auction site (http://www.oztion.com.au), has today announced an expansion of their online identity verification program, which covers both people buying and selling products online at OZtion.

Philip Druce, Managing Director for OZtion commented, “Online scams and fraud are still a common problem faced by Australians when they are shopping online. The Federal Government offers software that is supposed to make the Internet safer for Australians, but it doesn’t stop you from being ripped off when buying products online. Many popular online sites make it easy for scammers to setup fake identities, and rip people off. The Australian Government should be doing more to stop scammers.”

In partnership with Australia Post, OZtion is now offering an optional 100 point identity verification service. The new service allows Australians shopping online to be confident that they are dealing with a legitimate person, rather than a scammer using a fake identity.

The new 100 point identity verification service is available to any OZtion user, and costs $20 inc GST. The identity check is carried out by Australia Post, and confirms the user’s date of birth, identity, current residential address, and signature. Once the identity check has been completed, a special icon is displayed next to the user details on to signify that the user has been verified by Australia Post.

Posties lodge complaint against Australia Post

The union representing Tasmania’s postal workers has lodged a complaint against Australia Post in the Industrial Relations Commission in Hobart, relating to a secret ballot for protected industrial action.

The Communications Union says up to a fifth of its members didn’t receive ballot papers, and there was a week’s delay in the delivery of the documents after their lodgment in Melbourne.

The union’s Tasmanian secretary, Peter Miller, says the process under the Federal Government’s new workplace laws has been a sham.

A spokesman for Australia Post, Ian Cropper, has rejected the union’s claims.

“There’s no evidence to suggest that the ballot papers have been delayed and for the union to infer that Australia Post is to blame just doesn’t add up,” he said.

“The ballot process is handled entirely independently of Post by the Australian Electoral Commission.”

The union has rejected Australia Post’s offer of a 12 pct pay rise over two and a half years and a USD 500 performance bonus, while locking in all existing award entitlements and conditions.

DHL Global Mail implements Radio Frequency Identification technology for quality checks on international mail

DHL Global Mail, Deutsche Post World Net’s International Mail division, today announced that it is the first in the mail industry in Asia Pacific to implement Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) across multiple countries in the region. Based on an Automatic Mail Quality Measurement (AMQM) system, this effort is aimed at improving quality control checks for its mail logistics chain. The AMQM system, which has been installed in the mail terminals in Sydney, Hong Kong and Singapore, complements DHL Global Mail’s AMQM system in other regions. It is an enhanced service that provides greater visibility of the mailing process from the point when letters are posted to the last-mile delivery.

RFID tags based on the AMQM system will be utilized on selected international mail pieces between mail hubs, such as for example Frankfurt to Hong Kong, and between mail hubs and postal operators to regulate and enforce stringent quality control on the mail logistics chain to ensure mail pieces are delivered within the stipulated time frame to recipients. The data derived from the system will be used to optimize routing options for customers.

Key benefits for DHL Global Mail’s customers as a result of using RFID for quality checks focus mainly on increased reliability, transparency and improved service quality. As a result, customers will enjoy higher service quality for no additional costs.

The RFID technology uses devices attached to objects that transmit data wirelessly to a RFID receiver. It offers larger data storage capacity; read and write capability; and no line-of-sight requirement for both transponder and receiver – these are attributes that traditional bar-coding could not offer.

In addition to Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore, DHL Global Mail is planning to install the new technology in Japan in 2008.
