Australia Post to trial two new Hino hybrid vehicles

Australia Post has become the first customer in Australia to take delivery of a new hybrid truck which has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of its sizeable fleet.

The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan, accepted the new truck’s keys from its manufacturer, Hino Australia, on behalf of the corporation.

According to Coonan, the vehicle – which combines a diesel engine with hybrid technology – has great potential for Australia Post’s operations.

Australia Post is trialling two of these vehicles to transfer mail from inner-city lodgment areas back to its sorting facilities throughout Sydney.

The vehicles are ideally suited to urban stop-start operations, where constant use is made of the electric motor. They are also particularly useful to Australia Post in the city because they can access areas with underground docks that have height and width restrictions.

Steve Lotter, Hino Australia’s Chief Operating Officer, says Australia Post’s decision to take the hybrid is consistent with global experience in which leading postal services can readily recognise the potential of the hybrid system.

Lotter says that over the past two decades the motoring industry has introduced important breakthroughs, such as airbags and anti-lock brakes. Each started in a small way, but were soon taken up by the majority of manufacturers until they became universal and low-cost through economies of scale.

The Australia Post fleet travels a distance of approximately 173 million kilometres every year in delivering around 21 million items of mail each working day to over 10 million delivery points all over Australia.

QAS Launches QuickAddress Geocode to Enhance Business Data

QAS, an Experian® company announced the launch of a new data set solution, QuickAddress Geocode. QuickAddress Geocode references the PSMA’s* G-NAF (Geocoded National Address File), producing latitude and longitude coordinates for physical addresses. The key objective of this new solution is to provide the ultimate source for actual, physical address data.

The new data set solution is designed for and targeted at businesses which need sub-metre accuracy of addresses, such as telecommunications, government, insurance and transport organisations. For example, telecommunications companies can use this new data set to meet the needs of new compliance and legislation agreements, as well as locate service and fault breakdowns; government departments can use the new technology to assist in funding justifications, while emergency services can utilise the solution to verify exact locations for faster response times; insurance organisations can use QuickAddress Geocode to identify risk zones and allocate certain premiums; while logistic and transport companies can enhance their services through the use of QuickAddress Geocode to ensure the efficient delivery of goods and services.

Specific benefits of QuickAddress Geocode include verification and validation of physical addresses, spatial analysis, such as flood or bushfire zone impacts, and facilitation of map and visual presentation of address data.

Brendan O’Reilly, managing director Asia Pacific, QAS, states that the new data set solution is designed to benefit all areas of Australian business. “The QuickAddress Geocode solution gives companies access to pinpoint-accurate address data, enabling them to locate exact addresses very quickly, identify potential risk areas, and gain a visual representation of the address data. We anticipate the QuickAddress Geocode solution will be readily accepted in the Australian market.”

Latest mail on post box

AN AUSTRALIA Post policy of keeping post boxes at least 2km apart is unfair to Casey’s older residents, says Narre Warren North state Labor MP Luke Donnellan.

Casey Council lobbied Australia Post on behalf of Narre Warren North residents who wanted a post box on Drysdale Ave. The nearest post box is more than 1.5km away.

But last week the city released a letter it received from the national postal service stating it had no intention of installing a post box at the Heathdale estate site.

Mr Donnellan said the news would be a blow for older residents.

“Post boxes are particularly important for older residents in danger of feeling isolated,” he said. “It allows them to stay in touch with friends and relatives.”
