Deutsche Post Global Mail (DPGM) has appointed a new managing director of its Australia and New Zealand operations. Ken Mouldey joins the international mail service from FedEx, where he held senior management positions over nine years, most recently heading up Australian interstate operations. His Sydney-based position began yesterday.

Small firms to get Australia Post discounts

Small businesses can send their mail in bulk and receive legitimate discounts from Australia Post under proposed laws introduced into parliament.

The practice of giving bulk discounts to small business already exists but is not written into legislation.

The new laws also allow document exchanges to carry letters between their members’ premises and the exchange, again legitimising an existing practice many small businesses use as a complementary service to Australia Post.

Germans offer alternative to Australia Post

If you are sending mail abroad, there is a new alternative to Australia Post: the Germans.

Pack & Send, the national postal and packaging retail franchise, teamed up with Deutsche Post Global Mail last month to offer customers the Global Mail Packet, for the worldwide delivery of parcels weighing less than two kilograms.

“Deutsche Post Global Mail came to us because they wanted to enter the small business market by leveraging off our retail network,” said Pack & Send’s managing director, Michael Paul . “The alliance will allow us to provide the market with an alternative to Australia Post.”

DPGM has worked in Australia since July 2000, but has concentrated on bulk, business-to-business deliveries rather than small parcels.

Remote areas in Australia get cheaper postal rates

Australia Post will set special cheaper postal rates for medical supplies and educational material being sent to and from people living in remote areas of Australia under a plan announced last week by Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Richard Alston. Senator Alston said the decision would make life easier for people in remote areas who often rely on medicines, textbooks and other material being sent to them because of the lack of ready access to such material. To be eligible for the special rate, parcels can only contain medical prescription items, non-prescription pharmacy medicines or other medicines specified by a registered medical practitioner.
