DHL partnership with Brazilian Cia.Maritima

DHL has partnered with Cia.Maritima, Brazil’s largest producer of high-end beachwear, for the U.S. debut of the label’s 2008 collection during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami Swim shows.

DHL will provide its international delivery and logistics expertise to transport Cia.Maritima’s collection, which designer Benny Rosset debuted during Sao Paulo Fashion Week in June, from Brazil to Miami in time for its U.S. runway show debut on Wednesday, July 11th. DHL staff will also be on hand throughout the production with DHL “delivery men” removing the runway cover immediately before the start of show.

The partnership is the latest initiative in DHL’s multi-platform program to serve the unique needs of the fashion, apparel and retail industries. In January 2007, DHL became the Official Express Carrier and Logistics Provider of IMG Fashion’s U.S.-based fashion events. The relationship with IMG includes sponsorship of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Weeks in New York, Los Angeles and Miami.

In the U.S., dedicated DHL fashion staff in New York City offer services tailored to the industry such as sample room management, consolidation services and international vendor management. While DHL consolidation sweeps services combine shipments and reduce the number of consignments for DHL customers, DHL’s Import Express service allows fashion clients to navigate customs and government shipping regulations while ensuring critical deliveries arrive on time. With Import Express, shipments are handled by DHL from pickup outside the U.S. to delivery in the U.S., with all tracking, invoicing and single-currency payment through DHL.

Brazilian court suspends Correios night mail tender

A Brazilian commercial court has suspended a tender process by the country’s public postal operator, ECT (Empresa de Correios e Telegrafos), for night air mail services saying the bidding process was fraught with “consistent indications of irregularities“.

ECT launched a tender process for its overnight mail deliveries since its current contracts with Skymaster and Total airlines are about to run out. The court claims the BRL 132.7 million (EUR 49.7 million) contract is 60% over-valued and has suspended the tender while it seeks explanations from Correios executives.

There have been wide-ranging spate corruption allegations in Brazil over the over-valuing of public contracts and bribes paid to civil servants to secure them. ECT is one of the organisations under the spotlight, though it denies any wrongdoing by its employees.

Postal officials have been explaining to judge Raymond Path the complexities of its mail contracts, which are measured against aircraft use and the varying loads and load capacities on flights. ECT is now awaiting the verdict of the court on whether the tender procedure can be continued, albeit modified, or a new one should be launched.

The Brazilian press reported last year that ECT, tired of years of allegations over its outsourcing contracts, is considering launching its own air mail service through leased aircraft which might also, it believes, cut costs.

Portuguese and Brazilian Posts Partner

Portuguese public postal operator, CTT Correios, has signed a deal with its Brazilian counterpart ECT to launch joint mail, express and financial products later this year.

CTT has taken the lead in setting up a working group to study the international mail, express and money transfer markets with a view to launching new products and services, possibly with the same branding, in both countries in September.

“The agreement is indicative of the importance of commercial relations and growing migration between the two countries,” CTT said in a statement after the signing of the accord in Lisbon last week.

“The dynamism of these markets implies new products, services and brands in the target segments, a revision of costs and the negotiation of new margins between the operators with a view to introducing more competitive prices,” they added. The agreement, based on a common and jointly-managed “action plan”, is renewable annually for five years.

TNT projects fast growth in Brazil

After the acquisition of Brazilian express company Mercúrio in January 2007, TNT wants to accelerate its growth in Brazil. With 100 depots and around 6,000 employees, Mercúrio offers TNT a pole position for its South American growth strategy.

“TNT is aiming for double digit growth in Brazil as the domestic express market booms. TNT becomes the first express services company in this country to offer both domestic and international deliveries,” said TNT’s chief executive officer Peter Bakker in São Paulo.

TNT’s group managing director express, Marie Christine Lombard, added: “Orders from TNT’s global customers will boost Mercúrio’s activities in Brazil. Conversely, Mercúrio opens us the doors of another dynamic economy. The acquisition of Mercúrio fits into TNT’s strategy of becoming number one in emerging markets.”
