UPS launches Trade Direct Air for Brazilian companies

Express delivery service provider UPS will launch in the second half of 2005 the Trade Direct Air (TDA), a new air cargo service with support for Brazilian companies in the United States. UPS, active in Brazil for 10 years, has invested USD7mil in the country. In more than one year the Brazilian subsidiary doubled its transportation capacity from 28 – 30 m tons 55 – 60 m tons.

GeoPost sets sights on a global service

GeoPost, the pan-European parcel service owned by La Poste, plans to go global with an intercontinental deferred product in 2006. Claude Béglé, CEO of GeoPost International, told Transport Logistik the company would seek a partnership approach in mature markets such as the US. But elsewhere, it was prepared to invest. “South America is under-invested by integrators, ” Béglé said. “We are already having concrete discussions in Brazil, and talks in Argentina and Chile.” China, India and South Africa were among other countries earmarked by GeoPost.

Brazil looks into postal service bribery

Despite stiff government opposition, Brazil’s Congress on Wednesday opened a broad investigation of corruption in the country’s postal service. Allies of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva tried to block the probe, fearing it would stall Congressional votes on tax plans and other economic bills. The government has until midnight Wednesday to persuade lawmakers to withdraw their votes in favor of the probe. The investigation was sparked by revelations in the news weekly Veja that two businessmen, using a hidden camera, filmed themselves paying a 3,000 real (USD 1,240) cash bribe to Mauricio Marinho, head of the postal service’s department of contracts and administration.

Brazil’s Postal Service to be probed for corruption

The Brazilian government on Monday ordered a thorough investigation of the country’s postal service in the face of media reports of a corruption plot involving lawmaker and Labor Party leader Roberto Jefferson.

The Communications Ministry, which oversees the post office, announced that it had removed from the service’s head of contracting and administration, Mauricio Marinho, who was accused by the magazine Vega of engaging in corruption in complicity with Jefferson.

The weekly reported that Marinho and Jefferson saw to it that certain firms won bids for various contracts offered via the postal service and other public entities.

Brazil: DHL invests USD 20 million to expand

With the aim of two-folding the size of the Brazilian operations in a short-term DHL Express wants to expand the participation of big companies in its client portfolio. The company intends to have 80% of its income with the big companies. The remainder 20% would come from the small and middle sized companies. Presently 40% of the income comes from the big companies and 60% from the small and middle sized. Of the US$20mil to be invested in Brazil this year half is being injected in automation and IT.
