Brazil: TNT enters contract with Samsung

A contract worth R$20mil between TNT Logistics and Samsung SDI Brasil celebrates a five-years strategic partnership. In the first half of 2005, TNT will invest R$2.5mil in Samsung’s project in operations infrastructure and IT. TNT will be responsible for the whole supply chain of Samsung’s plant. The goal of TNT is that the long-term contract reduce logistic costs by 30%. The Brazilian subsidiary registered a net income of R$372mil in 2004 and predicts R$400mil for 2005 – 65% from the automobile sector; 15% from the agricultural area and 20% from industrial activity. The goal to reach R$1bil has been postponed from 2006 to 2008.

Pitney Bowes Expands Global Reach

Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI) today announced that it has completed two transactions that extend its penetration and reach outside of the U.S. — the acquisition of certain assets of Kilburn Office Automation Ltd. (Kilburn) in India and the formation of a joint venture with Semco Participacoes Limitada (Semco) in Brazil. Through these transactions Pitney Bowes is establishing direct sales operations in two of the world’s top fifteen mailing markets, whose combined mail volumes are approximately 23 billion pieces annually.

Brazil ECT to expand electronic mail services

The electronic mail service system from the Brazilian mail & telegraph services company ECT (Empresa de Correios e Telegrafos) is to start operations within 90 days. With the hybrid mail system, people can write letters through the Internet, in ECT website or in ECT units, to any place in Brazil or to more than 200 countries. The company only owns two hybrid mail units, to hold five units soon. ECT expects a 20pct decrease in expenses with letters transportation, with savings of RD1.4bil per year.

DHL announces USD20m investment in Brazilian operation

The express delivery services company DHL has announced investments of USD20m in its Brazilian operation in 2005. The amount will be split in equal parts in infrastructure and development of systems. The goal of the company that has 156 selling points in the country (40 owned ones) is to reach 400 points by the end of the year – 280 (70percent) owned ones. In Brazil, the company is represented by DHL Express, DHL Solutions (logistic operator) and DHL Danzas Air & Ocean (air and water transportation services).
