Notaries and Brazil Postal Service launch online joint venture

Brazil’s association of notaries, Anoreg, has invested 4mn reais (US$1.3mn) to launch an online notary service in partnership with the country’s postal service, Empresa Brasileira de Correios, and local bank Bradesco, executives told an online press conference Thursday. Customers will file a request for a notary document – from births and marriages to property rights – through the web site (www.cartorio24horas.com.br), which is delivered by the post office to the nearest notary office, and which will post documents back to the customer. Customers will be able to monitor progress online, and the total time for certificate to be delivered is estimated to be between 4 and 9 days.

The Brazilian Post Office has a network of services in 5,507 cities. with 82,000 employees, 12,200 postal outlets and a modern fleet of about 33,000 vehicles, transporting a volume of about 24.9 million pieces per day from north to south. In addition to the receipt and delivery of mail, the Post Office uses its network to supply various other services to the customers, including SEDEX express couriers, payment of bills, taxes, fines, and other kind of banking services.

Brazilian Express services market heats up

The battle for the express delivery services of international mails in Brazil will heat up over the next months due to the increasingly demand for such service in the country. After an increase of 7% in 2002 the sector predicts 10% growth this year – with an annual income of US$120mil. Sky Postal – authorized by United State Postal Services – entered Brazil in January 2003 and spent six months developing its logistics. It currently has 100 agents and forecasts a 10% stake of the market until late 2004.
