E-commerce: Expert says Posts must act more quickly

Posts have about 500 days left to grasp the opportunities being offered to them by e-commerce, estimates James ROPER, head of a global e-retail intelligence firm based in the United Kingdom.

Speaking at the UPU’s World Postal Business Forum, as part of POST-EXPO 2008, ROPER said e-retailing represented a “huge opportunity” and deplored Posts’ “inertia” in responding to this immense challenge.

Roper urged postal operators to act now in order to become “the” deliverers of choice for merchandise purchased online.

He stressed that Posts could play an important role in resolving the trust issue that still plagues the development of e-retailing. Posts must leverage their reputation as trusted third partners and their extensive networks to benefit from e-commerce, which is expected to increase dramatically over the next few years. Research shows that some 20% of the world’s population, or 1.4 billion people, already use the Internet, and an estimated 90% of sales will be affected by the Internet by 2020.

For that reason, ROPER strongly supported the UPU’s .post initiative, which aims to give the worldwide postal sector a unique secure and trusted identity on the Internet.

To protect customers from the elements, external locker banks can be fitted with a weatherproof canopy.

Lockers are available in several standard dimensions that handle everything from large parcels to letters, and sizes can be customised if required. They can also be supplied in a variety of colours and branded to aid customer identification.

A number of security features are factored into the locker bank design. They include sensors that detect any attempted break-ins, and software that detects tampering and sounds an alarm after several aborted attempts.

At the same time, user security data may be monitored in a number of different ways, using signature capture, web camera and biometrics techniques such as fingerprint recognition.

ByBox appoints new head of innovation

ByBox, the UK’s leading force in parts distribution, has further
strengthened its management team with the appointment of Mike Boxwell as Head of Innovation.

It is a completely new role and one which reflects the company’s commitment to innovation and technology.

With a background in IT, Mike has a long track record in the hand held scanner market with particular expertise in the courier and distribution industry.

Prior to joining ByBox Mike previously ran computer manufacturer Hand Held Products in the UK and also set up and ran Littlefoot which provides tracking and proof of delivery systems for major parcel carriers. Customers include La Poste, Royal Mail, DX, Amtrak, GeoPost and Business Post.

He has a strong knowledge of the parts distribution market having worked alongside ByBox for a number of years to provide hand held scanning solutions and will bring a valuable skill set to the already successful operation.

In his new role Mike will be involved in developing and managing a new scanning platform for ByBox’ unique network of electronic boxes whilst at the same time having specific responsibility for projects involving technology and innovation.

Mike is also no stranger to innovation having formed eBIKEshop in 2004 which
became the UK’s largest retailer of electric bikes. He sold the business at the end of 2005.

Aged 36 Mike is married with two young children.
