Over 875 Million Consumers Have Shopped Online – the Number of Internet Shoppers up 40pct in Two Years

More than 85 percent of the world’s online population has used the Internet to make a purchase — increasing the market for online shopping by 40 percent in the past two years — according to the latest Nielsen Global Online Survey on Internet shopping habits. Globally, more than half of Internet users have made at least one purchase online in the past month, according to Nielsen.
Among Internet users, the highest percentage shopping online is found in South Korea, where 99 percent of those with Internet access have used it to shop, followed by the UK (97pct), Germany (97pct), Japan (97pct) with the U.S. eighth, at 94 percent. Additionally, in South Korea, 79 percent of these Internet users have shopped in the past month, followed by the UK (76pct) and Switzerland (67pct) with the U.S. at 57 percent.
Globally, the most popular and purchased items over the Internet are Books (41pct purchased in the past three months), Clothing/Accessories/Shoes (36pct), Videos / DVDs / Games (24pct), Airline Tickets (24pct) and Electronic Equipment (23pct).
Credit cards are by far the most common method of payment for online purchases — 60 percent of global online consumers used their credit card for a recent online purchase, while one in four online consumers chose PayPal. Of those paying with a credit card, more than half (53pct) used Visa.
According to Nielsen, online shoppers tend to stick to the shopping sites they are familiar with, with 60 percent saying they buy mostly from the same site. “This shows the importance of capturing the tens of millions of new online shoppers as they make their first purchases on the Internet. If shopping sites can capture them early, and create a positive shopping experience, they will likely capture their loyalty and their money,” said Paul.

DHL starts next day delivery express service to US, Canada and Mexico

DHL Express has started a new service: with DHL US Next Day time-sensitive goods and documents from the most important Swiss economic regions will be delivered to the US, Canada and Mexico on the following day.

DHL Express is offering delivery before 10.30am (DHL Express 10.30), before 12.00pm (DHL Express 12.00) or before the close of business (DHL Express Worldwide). With US Next Day DHL can deliver to almost anywhere in the US as well as commercial centers in Canada and Mexico by the next day.

This new service is made possible by the DHL hub in Wilmington, Ohio, one of the largest private airports in the world, as well as four further international gateways. More than 34,000 staff in the US work around the clock to distribute the items. In recent years DHL has invested 1.2 billion US dollars in the comprehensive network and in expanding the hub in Wilmington.

The commercial centers of Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, Biel/Bienne, Basle, Lucerne, Zürich and Wil (St. Gallen) all benefit from DHL’s US Next Day service. A customer in the Geneva area can have his US Next Day item collected by DHL as late as 12.45pm. Customers in the Basle region have the last collection time at 3.45pm because a dedicated DHL plane is used for this service to fly from Basle via East Midlands to Wilmington. Duty is paid on these items while in the air.

UPS expanding global service in wake of US economic downturn

United Parcel Service (UPS) is expanding an international air-freight service that guarantees delivery dates in the wake of a slowing US economy, the Toronto Star reports.
The UPS Express Freight service will more than triple the amount of express lanes currently served, UPS officials said.
The service, which now reaches 52 countries, is designed to provide guaranteed time-definite, overnight-to-three day door-to-door delivery including routine customs clearance to major global metropolitan areas.
UPS has been boosting international revenue at a faster rate than in the US, where the economic expansion is waning, according to the Toronto Star. The report said UPS international operations accounted for 28 pct of the company’s total revenue in 2006.

Canada Post: Judge OKs class action suit over postal charges

Canada Post could be required to return tens of millions of dollars in shipping charges to thousands of businesses as a result of a recent Ontario court ruling.

Superior Court Justice Joan Lax certified a class-action proceeding initiated by Ottawa-based Lee Valley Tools Ltd., which has been embroiled in a long-running dispute with the Crown corporation about its charges for shipping parcels to customers.

The ruling noted there are more than 57,000 commercial clients that could have a claim against Canada Post, if its billing practices for parcels are found to violate the federal Weights and Measures Act.

For the past seven years, Canada Post has charged customers to ship parcels based on the greater charge of the actual weight or the “volumetric weight” of an item. This is so that the charges on lightweight yet bulky items cover the cost of transportation.

Since 2003, the Crown corporation has used a device known as a “cubiscan,” which Lee Valley has alleged can overstate the volume of objects, especially irregularly shaped parcels, by as much as 20 per cent.

Commercial clients are required to pre-pay and weigh their products and if Canada Post determines that the total was underestimated, it levies an addition charge. Until January 2007, it did not refund any overpayments to customers.

John Caines, a spokesman for Canada Post, described the class-action certification as a “procedural” ruling. “We deal with all of our customers fairly and in the same way,” Mr. Caines said. “This is the way the industry measures parcels.” He added that Canada Post is the only company now issuing credits for overpayments.

Enforcement of the Weights and Measures Act is the responsibility of Measurement Canada, part of Industry Canada. Alan Johnston, president of Measurement Canada, responded in December 2005 that the relevant section of the Act did not define a “proscribed limit of error” for shipping charges, so it could not be enforced.
