The Canadian Union of Postal Workers plans to go on strike just after midnight Thursday to demand for better job security and increase of wages, it is reported Thursday.

The 45,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers have been without a contract since Jan. 31. Last month, 92 percent of postal workers voted in favor of a strike mandate over issues including salaries, subcontracting, retirement, work load and safety.

Both sides in contract negotiations at Canada Post said a large scale mail strike will be averted Friday, according to Canada Post Wednesday.

“We’re anticipating that we’re going to get a deal,” John Caines, a spokesman for the post office, told local reporters.

Canada Post received formal notice yesterday from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) of its intention to commence strike action as of July 18, 2003. Although the Corporation regrets this tactic by the Union and the effect it could have on business, it remains confident a negotiated settlement can be reached.

There’s no imminent postal strike, says an optimistic spokesman for Canada Post.

“Things look pretty good actually. We’re back at the table Monday for some intense negotiations,” said John Caines.

Results of a strike vote by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers were expected Sunday. The union could not be reached for comment.
