TNT eyes new mail, express partnerships with China

TNT NV said it hopes to expand its express parcel services with China Post and develop a new partnership in its mail division to service a planned national direct marketing operation. TNT chief executive officer Peter Bakker told XFN-Asia that he believes that express or parcel freight operations have the greatest growth potential in China for the Dutch company, which provides logistics, express and mail services. ‘The biggest opportunity will be in express operations, the parcel freight operations,’ he said in an interview, predicting it will eventually overtake the firm’s current business leader — logistics – in importance. TNT’s express service in China was a stand-out performer in the group’s interim results for the second quarter 2005, growing at over 27 pct compared to 12.8 pct recorded for express services across the rest of the world excluding Europe. Bakker said that until now the company has not had its own international parcel service for China.

PWC Buys GeoLogistics

PWC Logistics strengthened its position in the Middle East with the USD454 million acquisition of global freight forwarder and third-party logistics provider GeoLogistics of Santa Clara, Calif. GeoLogistics will continue to operate under its own name as a wholly owned subsidiary of Kuwait-based PWC. Senior management will remain in place. “Freight forwarding is a service that will continue to grow at impressive rates and one where strong market participants will continue to distance themselves from their midsize competitors,” said PWC Chairman Tarek Sultan. “GeoLogistics will significantly increase PWC Logistics’ global forwarding capabilities, especially within, to and from the Middle East.” It’s PWC’s third acquisition of 2005.

TNT accelerates its China business

TNT logistics supply chain solutions and mail services, is to adopt a cooperation form to expand its service network in Mainland instead of a franchise form it announced at the end of 2004, a source said on September 4.
Indeed, its previous franchise development plan has been replaced by the alliance-based cooperation development plan, according to the TNT headquarters.
The company changed the earlier plan because there has not yet been a franchise act in the mainland, an executive at the cooperation development division of TNT told reporters. For the moment, scores of Chinese agents are responsible for TNT’s China express business and its 25 branch companies for its international express business. In the cooperation form, its Chinese partners operate under the TNT brand and their sales rely on TNT, while its Chinese agents do not operate under brand in the franchise form and just take some fees.
