Chinese postal fee increase to go ahead

Postal charges will rise in April as planned – the first increase in six years.
Postmaster-General Luk Ping-chuen said yesterday there was no reason to further postpone the rise despite growing calls for cuts in public service fees and charges amid the economic downturn. Postage was originally set to be raised last month.

Fedex to expand services to 100 more chinese cities

The U.S.-based express delivery company Federal Express (FedEx) will expand its services to 100 more Chinese cities over the next five years.
Eddy Chan, vice president of China & Mid Pacific Region of FedEx, made the announcement at an international forum for mayors held recently in north China’s Tianjin Municipality.
The business of FedEx in China has been snowballing since it made its debut in the country in 1984. It now can provide services to 190 Chinese cities, with its 11 flights shuttling between China and the outside world each week.

DHL Invests $300M in China, Japan, Singapore

DHL Worldwide Express is investing nearly $300
million to enhance its ground infrastructure in the Asia Pacific region. The
investment is aimed at major markets in Greater China, Japan and Singapore,
said a statement received here.” The article states: “DHL will invest $82
million in an Asian hub in Hong Kong, $35 million in a Southeast Asia
gateway at Singapore’s Changi Airport, and $125 million in Japan, DHL Asia
Pacific chief operating officer Marc Duali said in the statement.

China Post Introduces PC-Letter

October 24, 2001 — Tang Min, China Daily (Beijing): “A revolutionary new
system that can send letters via computer from any location in the world to
China in just several minutes and for no more than 3.5 yuan (US$0.40) is to
be launched in 18 Chinese cities. The new Desk Post Office service –
PC-Letter – will be available in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Chongqing and
Liaoning next month, and will be spread to other Chinese regions in the near
future, the China Post Administration announced yesterday.

Fedex unveils biggest express center in China

BEIJING, Oct 21, 2001 (Xinhua via COMTEX) — Federal Express Corp. (FedEx), the world’s largest express transportation company, recently unveiled its new 6,080 square-meter FedEx-DTW Express Center in China.

The new center, the largest and most advanced of its kind in China, is located in the Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

The center features sorting and distribution systems that incorporate cutting-edge wireless technology designed to boost productivity, provide data accuracy and achieve real-time transmission.

With the installation of an integrated warehouse management system, the facility is able to handle 6,000 packages per hour, and it is also able to double the packages to 12,000 per hour if necessary.
