Express industry welcomes release of ITC study

The Air Courier Conference of America (ACCA) welcomed the release of a study on the express delivery services industry by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). The report concluded that U.S.-based express delivery services suppliers encounter a range of trade barriers in foreign markets and that initiatives such as postal reform, trade negotiations, and improvements in customs practices could improve the industry’s competitiveness in foreign markets.

Beck & Call delivers for Amtrak

Beck & Call, the company offering a timed home delivery service for retailers and consumers in south-west London, is now handling home deliveries for parcels carrier Amtrak within its operational area. “It’s a difficult area for us in some ways,” Amtrak managing director Jonathan Smith told e.logistics Magazine. “This arrangement solves our problem, and at the same time pushes more volume through the Beck & Call system.”

UPS Store records first-year success

One year after launching a historic re-branding campaign, The UPS Store network has generated triple-digit growth in UPS shipping volume and added more than 300 new stores for a total of 3,300 locations. This achievement has led franchisor Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. and its parent company, UPS, to set a goal of expanding The UPS Store network to 5,000 locations in the United States by 2007, including innovative concepts in under-served areas such as urban neighborhoods, Free Enterprise Zones, college campuses and military bases.

Hundreds of jobs threatened at DHL HQ

International express courier DHL plans a major reorganisation that could threaten nearly half its 950-strong workforce at its global headquarters in Brussels, the Belgian press said Tuesday. The German-owned company is planning to sack 173 people at its complex at the Belgian capital’s Zavantem airport, and move another 177 posts to its European headquarters at Bonn, the Belga news agency said. Another 98 posts could be moved elsewhere in the world, it said.
The head of DHL in Belgium and Luxembourg, Frank Beuselinck, told AFP that it was premature to talk of job losses.
